I reckon I'd need a crate of Scotch and a month in the sun to come up with an answer, so any thoughts appreciated.

For the avoidance of doubt, anything stated in the above post is written without prejudice; is probably completely uninformed opinion, and possibly just a figment of my imagination. Readers should either ignore, treat with contempt, or simply accept the spirit it is written in, without recourse to huffy replies, legal action or threats of violence.
That includes YOU.

Dreams are, according to a prevalent theory, ways that your brain processes and sorts all the new information it received during the day. Well, they have a whole load of that.

They can appartently see a lot better that it was previously said - which backs up my experience.

Do you think it's the case that they can see better than we have been led to believe by experts, but simply take a bit of time to be able to identify and process what they see (their parents, presumably, being one of the first things they'll learn to identify by sight due to their sense of smell helping them to do this)?

maybe. My son would spend ages studying the faces of people that were close to him when the books said all they could see was rough outlines and shapes. Didn't seem that way to me. I suppose when everything is new you can't focus your attention on everything.

I had a strange experience with my wee one when she was only about three or four days old, when she spent about 10/20 minutes staring directly into my face as if to say 'right then, and who the feck are you'. Like I say, it feels very strange at the time but it is giving them an image they will start to identify with your smell (I think).

Just as an aside, I don't speak to my kid in tha daft sqeaky voice much beloved of women, as she seems to find it comforting just as it is.

Babies, apparently, devote a lot of their brain power to recognising faces. They can definately see a lot evenwhen very young. I had read that if you stick your tongue out to a new born baby it will copy you. I did this with my two and they both stuck their tongues out back at me. They were minutes old at the time.

From personal experience this is the way to go. My kids were both early speakers. I put it down to the fact that we didn't "coochie coochie coo" but spoke to them as people from minute 1.

I remember him spending lots of time looking at me and the missus' faces at the time too,few hours or so of him opening his eyes, I guess, and when my sister came round to visit he spend the first half an hour scanning all over her face just drinking it all in. I guess recognising who is who is the most important thing initially.

Probably dreaming about those carefree days when all they had as surroundings was a womb without a view.

Men.

We spend 9 months trying to bust out of the thing.

Once we're out we spend the rest of our lives trying to get back in.
