Glasgow
I said a while back that Glasgow was repeating the mistakes of the 1960s with much if its current development. These learned chaps are taking a similar view:-
TWO of Scotland's leading architects have claimed that Glasgow's riverside is being "raped" by developers and that the city's planning policy is still destroying its built heritage. Andy Macmillan and Isi Metz-stein, who designed the controversial St Peter's Seminary in Cardross and are credited with influencing modern architecture, claimed that "short-term" policies were driving the city's development. Click here for Special Reports "Things are done without any real continuity," said Professor Macmillan. "There's no value put on what was there before. If you can make more money by using the site, then you say 'let's clear it all away and build houses'." Targeting the Clydeside redevelopment, he said: "There is a rape of the waterfront going on. Buildings are being thrown up along there because people believe that they can get higher rents from riverside views." Professor Metzstein said the city's planning policies differed from the 1960s - when large sections of Victorian architecture were demolished - only in terms of the rate at which buildings were being cleared: "You have the same destruction, but very slowly: it's a drip, drip effect." Re: Glasgow
It is pish what they're doing. It's symbolised by the 1870 built Beco building which sits right in the middle of Tradeston (on the right as you come out of Glasgow Central on a train on the south side of the river) and the developers want to flatten it to 'regenerate' the area. Regenerate incidentally means build expensive yuppy flats.
Only a matter of time till the building burns down. Being a shipping warehouse it is one of the last remaining remnants of Glasgow's great sea trading tradition in that area. I want to to see a riverside like say Dublin, with pubs, cafes etc. along the river bank. They're building these soulless monstrosities everywhere. A few months ago I was going to a gig at the SECC and I had the brainwave of parking on the south bank of the Clyde and walking across on the Squinty Bridge. That's the one you see behind Jackie Bird on Reporting Scotland. But I couldn't park anywhere, barriers everywhere, residents parking signs everywhere, basically they may as well put up 'strangers - get tae f**k' signs. It's lifeless, soulless, boring and stops people walking the banks of the Clyde. The only thing being regenerated is property developers bank accounts. |

Re: Glasgow
the infrastructure of that area is still wrong in alot of ways but that isn't the concern of the property developers..

in comparison the leith based new multi stories have loads of eateries close at hand, and if you drive past they look lived in already. tbf leith was already a residential area and this stuff was an add on. the glasgow stuff is still in industrial/ex industrial areas that don't have the amenities that a residential area needs.

Glasgow council is Labour of course and when did they ever show vision. I have been saying for years that it was high time glasgow developed a cafe culture along the riverbank. Everything is in place.........except ambition , oh and the politicians of course.
