Organ Donation

Alex Salmond is to offer his personal support to an "opt-out" system for organ donation in a bid to tackle Scotland's organ crisis.

The SNP leader has been persuaded by calls to introduce a system of "presumed consent", by which organs are automatically taken unless an individual has declined to participate in the scheme before death.

What do you reckon? Presumably just for Scottish residents.

It's being pushed through by George Foulkes!

Personally I'm against it, I have my reasons for not being an organ donor and should this system be brought in I'd be one of the people who would opt out, they're obviously banking on there not being too many like me.

Re: Organ Donation

If my post-death organs can prolong a life then take them away. What harm can it do? They're no good to me.

I'd maybe stay away from the liver though.

Re: Organ Donation

Would there not be a human rights issue here? Say on the basis of someones religion (I actually don't know if any religions are opposed to organ donation except the JWs).

I got this in a form for a new Driving Licence........(no, I never lost it, just had to have it reviewed due to sudden/unexpected Type 1 diabetes confirmation )

I didn`t tick any boxes, just wrote at the bottom. "Take anything you can use"

But your right, my liver also is probably not up to much.

The point is.........if anything moves on, it ain`t the "Husk" that we leave behind to be burnt/buried.

And how many people die annually waiting for just ONE kidney etc.

I would have been long dead if it wasn`t for 5 blood transfusions earlier this year.

The difference please?

No difference at all ZH. I give blood regularly too. Really can't see any reason not to give up your organs after death

This has been a law in Belgium for years now, and rightly so. It does no harm as anyone who is against helping someone when they've croaked it, can opt out.

The NHS is seroiusly struggling for EVERY type of Organ donation, and have been for years and years. The truth is this action is really needed. The amount of needless deaths is scandalous. Aint no religious reasons against it as far as I can see (apart from Jehovahs).

I actually thought this was a UK wide initiative

Yes, good idea. What is the point of all these perfectly good organs being buried when they could save lives?

Opt-out should've been the case from the very start I reckon.

Re: Organ Donation

I just cannot see the counter argument

If folk dont like the idea ....opt out.

The idea that someone is dying for want of a kidney whilst perfectly healthy ones get cremated (in folk who probably would have been happy to consent) is daft.

There may be the odd case where parents will be offended and presumably provision will be made to accomodate their feelings.

Overall its another good idea from SNP

I would go along with this idea also would like blood donations should be given every 3 months by law.

I work in Blood Transfusion. This is a non starter. We just need those who can donate to come along and save a life

But the Blood banks in Scotland are at a real low at the minute. If you have O pos, O Neg, or A pos or A Neg you should get down to your next local session or visit the Donor Centre on Lauriston place. Open Mon - Sat.

2 Units of Blood are on standby for EVERY baby being born. A teaspoon of Blood can save a newborn babies life.

Get yersells along........

Why not?

Is it too much strain on the individual to give blood every 3 months?

They won`t take my blood now, due to my "condition" and I think thats unfair. I have, as above, diebetes, but am HIV negative, Hepatitis A, B, and C negative. And possibly lower blood-sugar than you.

But they just thank me and send me on my way. Unfair.

Its really the logistics. There is a million reasons (medical) why a particular person may not be able to give Blood, and the restriction are getting tighter all the time. To arbitrarily make laws for everyone to donate is pretty unworkable TBH. Even people with a cold are unable to give blood, as the people who receive the blood are more often than not extremely ill, and for example they may not have an immune system, so a simple cold could prove fatal.

Its estimated that only 5% of people in Scotland who CAN donate actually DO donate. Basically the same 5% are keeping the blood stocks going (just). If there is no blood in the bloodbanks, Hospitals have to start cancelling operations!!!!!!

A person need to be fit and healthy and between the age of 17 to their 66th birthday. The actual donating of the blood takes a person between 2 and 7 minutes. Scotland is well serviced, no-one DOESN'T have the opportunity to donate at some point. Eg in Edinburgh the transfusion service visits leith, willowbrae, portobello, sighthill, blackkhall, comely bank, royston/Wardieburn amongst others. Almost every town in the Borders, East Lothian and Mid lothian is visited 2 or 3 times a year. In fife all the major times are visited on a regular basis.

Cheers

Re: Organ Donation

Never done it and don't know where they take the blood. How efficient are they - I've spent plenty time hanging around for hours in hospitals waiting for appointments when I'm ill. Have a habot of turning a 30 munite task into a whole afternoons activity.

I guess they are open outside working hours.
