Less paramilitary bampottery and a fluffy political ceasefire across here means that the police and courts have more time to nail feckers like

Re: FAO NI watchers

My work takes me to Northern Ireland a lot, and I'm just back from working two weeks in Belfast, Conor.

A finer lot of people I've yet to meet. 99% total gems, 1% loonies, fortunately I don't get to meet the loonies.

Sounds about right - fortunately the loonies all live in about four or five places and tend to wear OF tops at all times (including the OF zip-up jacket, for formal occasions) so it's fairly easy to stay out of their way.

If you let me know when you're next across I can send a message around the NI Hibs lads and lasses to see if anyone is around to meet you for a jar. Let me know if we can help with a lift from the airport etc too - I pass both airports a few times each week.

BTW, this was posted on BBC Online this morning.

Only a Lurgan person would think of putting a pipe bomb under a child's trampoline.

The last of the bams doing a great job with their retro 1970s looney act:

Pipe bomb found under trampoline

A number of houses had to be evacuated in Lurgan overnight following the discovery of a pipe bomb.

The fire and rescue service and police were called to a house in Princeton Avenue after a car was set alight.

They found the device under a child's trampoline in the garden. Army technical experts removed the device and and a number of other items.

It is understood police do not believe the attack was sectarian. The car was badly damaged in the incident.

What about this bit though ""The victims were hard-working decent people who came to Northern Ireland to help the economy".

Surely they came for their own benefit ?
Irrelevant of course but it seems strange they have to make it look they are here (or there) for our benefit

The people in the house were all employed folk who came to NI to do jobs that no one here would do (chicken gutting etc). I'd say their labour has helped keep some of the big employers in NI.

Fair enough, helping the NI economy wasn't their motive for coming here, but it is the result.

If we could have had loads of different nationalities and cultures in NI for the last 30 years it would have helped prevent some areas being barricade ghettos belonging to one local mob or another, for example South Belfast has become more cosmopolitan in recent years and is much, much better for it.

Of course mate but imo making them out to be some sort of super race does no-one any favours .
The non taxing of cars for example doesn't help the economy much does it ?

That's a fair point - I think the judge was just trying set out his stall on the anti-Eastern European racist violence issue.

And if we're talking about NI, a country where a tenth of people claim disability and 60% make their living from dubious government/quango jobs, I'm not about to point the finger at factory workers for dodging their £100 car tax. The locals make sure they don't miss a single scam, at least the Eastern Europeans are working for a living.

I don't agree.

They are subject to the same laws, but have been able to benefit from the fact that the laws which allow them to drive cars from overseas we written before many folk actually made a habit of doing this.

The Criminal Justice Inspectorate in NI have just finished a report which the government in NI will use to close any loopholes.

Like I said, locals in NI scam every penny that's going. But try getting a local dole/ disability/ housing-scammer to do a day's work gutting chickens.

The locals in NI have a habit of doing that too. (Although we rarely hear of Eastern European folk in NI kicking up a fuss about anything.)

Like you say, what applies to one should apply to all? Therefore, wur new residents have much right to kick up a fuss about whatever they want.

EDIT: Enjoy the game!

If youre worried about the Poles avoiding paying car tax its a pretty petty worry. There are uk citizens robbing the benefit system blind, that to me is a far bigger problem.

Cheers NI Hibby for the news story. My Mum is from Norn Iron.(Garvagh to be exact)

Just to be clear - I'm not bothered about it at all. Like I said before, considering the work that Eastern Europeans do in NI they're more than welcome to it. Anyone on factory worker wages and is entitled to save money wherever they can.

BTW, drop me a line if you are ever across in NI so I can check of any of the NI Hibbys (NI Hibs Supporters' Club - nihibs.com) are about for a jar, although we don't have many members in Garvagh!

Never said you were...Forza Hibs did seem to though.

BTW, do some parts of NI still get away with not paying utilities and TV licences etc??.My mum said that years ago they were afraid to go into certain areas, for obvious reasons.

Was just checking. The more different cultures we have in NI the better - I just wish it had happened years ago.

I don't think there are any areas left in NI where folk can dodge the likes of TV licences as officials won't follow it up, but some folk in NI are notorious scammers as a result of the lawless culture which used to exist to a greater extent here. Some day someone will pull the plug on the handouts over here and, as I said in a different thread, there'll be a few sleepless nights and trips to the job-centre for plenty of NI folk!
