School dinner

Trying to cut down on obecity in children so they have done away with chips and burgers in schools but i reckon that isn't enough.

Should chippys and chippy vans be closed during school hours or am i taking this too far? And what about Greggs and other bakerys or even McDonalds who all have healthy foods optional but in all honesty you don't go to such places for the "healthy" option.

Re: School dinner

By the time kids are hoked on Chippy's and Greggs sausage rolls it's probably to late.

Not enough kids get a varied enough diet at home to decide what they really like. Too many working mums maybe?

Watched the first series of Jamies School Dinners and was pretty shocked at how little todays kids know about food.. if the parents dont teach the kids they'll only pick up bad habits at school.

I think it could take the best part of a generation before the message starts to get through.

P.S. I think I'll have a steak bake for my lunch now that I'm thinking about them... (it's like a crack addiction to me!)

Its not the same now Forza, kids sit around and play computer games instead of climbing trees, playing footie, playing kissie catchy, etc etc etc. No wonder we have kids with an obesity problem. I of course am sylph like in appearance so I am allowed to say things like that.

Computer games, hark at the old **** eh!

Re: School dinner

I think there are factors in terms of the foods available and also the inactivity of Kids.

It is very difficult as a Parent, I am not as keen to let my Kids go and roam the Streets on bikes etc in the way I did as a child due to the terrible things we hear in the News day in day out. I encourage my boys to run around but I like to keep them supervised and obviously that curtails their activity.

Food and more specifically food aimed at youngsters nowadays seems to be very unhealthy, on the whole there seems to be so much more choice than the 'olden' days and whilst there is a big drive towards 'healthier' foods its very difficult to sway the Kids in that direction all the time.

Obesity is definitely a problem but people will always have access to the food they want and so it should be, its all about choice and the best way is to try and educate the Kids to eat a wee bit better and exercise more. If you don't want Kids eating crap from chip vans etc packe their lunch and don't give them money, simple.

Re: School dinner

The Fins where very succssful at changing children's eating habits but they understood that you have to set taste prefrences from a very early age. If they've been weened on smash and gravy (I kid you not, this is true) getting them to like their veg will be tricky.

That said, healthy food can be really nice. Veggie chilli os my personal favourite but pasta and pizza can be good food (not out of Pizza Hut, though).

I'll ask the question again.

Should chippys be shut at school break times?

They should restrict their planning consents within a certain distance of the school. Newsagents nearby shouldn't be allowed to sell fags and ice cream vans should not be allowed on or near the premises.

Better still. Lock the fecking school gates between 9 and 4 !!!

Re: School dinner

If kids are used to fizzy drinks, sweeties, chips, pizzas etc, on a daily basis before they go to school then school dinners are fighting a losing battle from day one. They will find a route to the junk food at lunch times the same way any other drug addict will find a way.

I think they now have to put these details on the boxes/wrappers of the 'food' but I'm not sure about on the wall! I don't actually eat at McDonalds but the Kids have the odd happy meal and I can't say I've noticed the information posted on the wall or on the big menu, could be wrong though.

Na,Why should the public no get a chippy at lunchtime if they fancy one because some parents are too lazy to feed their kids properly?

Give everyone a free school meal each day (With chips being part of that diet twice a week or so) and don't let kids leave the school grounds at break times.

For the benafit of Scotlands health thats why.

Primary that may work but keeping people in high school in the grounds is just stupid, may aswell be in prison.

Are you saying that anywhere that sells unhealthy food should be closed as it would benefit Scotland's health?

Schools are for learning during the day,Seems to work here ok

Re: School dinner

You can close chippies, force kids to eat at school, whatever. Fact is that most of the fat kids will eat just as badly, or worse, at home as they do at school.

There should be more exercise at school, than the small amount there is, but really it comes down to parenting. Computers are only a problem if you let folk sit in front of them for too long. same with TV. Books are hardly the most physical of activites but only a mentalist would try to close down Libraries because of it. Parents should take responsibility.
