Weekend General Elections?

It appears Brown has got himself in a bit of a hole this week. Despite being so far ahead in the UK polls last weekend his Iraq announcement appears like the spin he promised we would no longer get..

Tories now look like they have their tails between their legs and in a campaign - however short - anything could happen.

I think Brown has to go for it but he mist have concerns over Scotland and turnout particularly dark evenings..

Any reason why we never have weekend elections that would surely drive up turnout?

In Spain elections are always on a Sunday and that makes sense to me. But they are other reasons for not voting other than laziness and the inconvenience of work.

What, the bit where he stood there in Iraq and said 1000 troops would be home before christmas knowing full well that the soldiers already there would take the inference that out of those currently serving 1000 would be going home when in fact what he meant was that some of them [up to 500 I believe] have already gone home and the other 500 are sitting in Germany and wont even be posted to Iraq in the first place. Thats not spin thats outright fukking lies and I hope Brown loses any election heavily at least partly because of this. How can you trust someone who will openly ram it right up the people who are supposed to be defending democracy.

His defence minister was squirming like fekk on Newsnight last night under the beady glare of Jeremy P.

Never mind count on a sunday there is no way that voting would ever take place on a sunday so that leaves only saturday as a possibility.

That would never work particularly for young folk. The chance of folk going to the polls rather than heading for a good night out would be pretty slim.

For me Thursday's work well although I do believe we need to embrace technology to make voting easier for folk.

I think it should be a 48 hr poll embracing technology as you say but of course we've not even yet mastered postal voting from fraud...

It is a farce kenny and let's not go back to the shambles in May. It is not difficult to comeup with electronic voting and counting. The technology exists and in my view folk ought to be offered this as a choice. Some voters will be against this and that is fine. it should be optional to begin with.
