Rally Driver McRae Linked To Helicopter Crash

A helicopter registered to former rally driving champion Colin McRae has crashed near his home in Lanark, killing at least one person. Sky's Scotland Correspondent James Matthews reports from close to the scene of the accident.

Tragedy whoever was in it. All thats on the news is that the aircraft was registered to Macrae and it came down near his home.

aww god, that is terribly sad, i saw on Sky News that it was in his grounds, but they said the police weren't confirming anything until tomorrow, as they didnt yet know how many people were on board.

Bridie informed me of some news while watching MOTD, checked online and it seems that there are 4 people involved, but no confirmation that either he, or is family, have been involved.

I hope it's not him.

I'm with you in support of hoping for the best, but it happened at 4.00pm-ish. Most road accidents are sorted out in less time.

I don't want to ask this question, but I'm already saying it, would Colin be the pilot?

Awful news. My house is barely 3 miles from the scene, and the kids said they saw a copter flying over from the direction of Hamilton just before the time of the incident. Like you Sean, I'm clinging onto the hope it isn't CM, but four people have still lost their lives, which is still incredibly sad.

Just saw the terrible news.

What a great sportsman and a very, very talented man.

I used to regularly argue with a mate that McRea is a better driver than Schumaker since Micheal drives using science/mathmatics but I reckon Colin drives on instinct. And what an instinct.

There seems to have been quite a few helicopter accidents recently , is it that they are becoming more popular or are they a bit dangerous ? I've always fancied a helicopter flight but now i'm not so sure

Not to clued up on rallying, but Colin McRaes name was always at the forefront of his sport. He was a Scottish Champion, not many of these types. Family and friends will be distraught. Like Forza id like to experiance a helicopter ride, after seeing a schinook [ spelling] at a recent airshow. I honestly couln't believe the manouvering capabilities of that beast. Weather condititions right now in Edin are terrible and i'm sure play a part in helicopters and their pilots difficulties in controlling. The sea rescue guys do a sterling job in atrocious conditions for the good of others and the boys who work on the rigs couldn't do without them in their job.

I've been going to work in them for 22 years now and not had an accident - several scary moments but no harm done. I'd recommend a flight if you fancy it but the novelty wears off very quickly - a few minutes flying over the countryside doesn't compare to 3+ hours over the sea, wearing three layers of clothing under a rubber suit, with a pair of ear protectors and no conversation.
