Phone a housing association - say Port o' Leith. Ask them who they get to fix their tennants stairs.

They will defo be able to help you as my stair is continually getting fcuked but some junkie haf wit and the housing assoc are quite good at getting somone in fairly rapid. They can afford this thou, as their working tennants pay through the fcukin nose

thats a route that would work IF the council tenants ALL said YES. Your problem being that some will undoubtably say NO cause they are not bothered about the tenement itself. One of the not so nice joys about sharing the costs of a building. You can always go ahead with those that want it, but the cost will spiral no doubt.

I'm currently experiencing similar problems at the moment with common repairs to the guttering and ponting of the tenement flat I stay in, it's a fecking nightmare. I fail to understand why some idiots in the tenement would NOT agree to such repairs.

Kev, if you've got feckwit neebs who refuse to pull their weight with commom repairs, contact the Property Repairs section at the City Chambers / Technical Services 329 High Street.(529-4632)
Ask them to come out and do an inspection and thereafter issue a Statutory Notice to have repairs done. This should get your neighbour to sit up and take notice.

Re: stair intercom entry systems

Yeah, as the above poster says, vital repairs can be forced onto tenants by the council. The same applies to shared cost i.e. a hole in the roof in borne by all the people living directly underneath it.

Our stairwell lighting was knackered (only turning on about 9pm, had to pick way down in the dark) and had evidently been that way all summer. Being a studenty bit, and most students (unlike myself) being lazy b*stards, no-one had done a thing about it. Rang council Friday lunch, they came and repaired it Friday afternoon. Sure everyone else would have been happy to save that massive effort.

(Oh aye, and is there anything you hate more than folk who chub open/prop open the main doors?)

Once a Statutory notice has been issued, you have a certain amount of time to carry out the work, ot at least prove to the Council that you are arranging to have it carried out. If you pass the date, the Council organise the work/appoint a contractor to carry out the work, then add a 10 or 15% (I can't remember) administration fee.
