Stu has a spectacular aura about
Who are the top five UK managers of all time?

Always been a subject that's interested me this. My choice is loaded with Scottish managerial talent. It's a very subjective one of course but here goes:

1. Sir Matt Busby
2. Jock Stein
3. Brian Clough
4. Bill Shankly
5. Sir Alex Ferguson

Re: Who are the top five UK managers of all time?

Very difficult choice, but here goes with mine...

1/ Jock Stein
2/ Sir Matt Busby
3/ Bob Paisley
4/ Brian Clough
5/ Don Revie

Hard to leave out Alex Ferguson and Bill Shankly, I just think Revie deserves to be there for the incredible achievement of lifting a small second Division yorkshire team to be one of the most feared sides in Europe, and Cloughie because of his unbelievable achievements with small clubs like Derby County and Nottingham Forest.

Shankly has to be there above Bob Paisley as it was him that turned Liverpool into the massive team they became and Paisley just carried it on.

Fergie has to be in there too, not just for his record with Man U, but in my view more importantly his time at Aberdeen which proved that it was possible for provincial clubs to compete with the OF and to win in Europe. I loved the way that the Dons used to swagger into Glasgow and put it right up them (however I wish it had been us doing it). I also loved the way Alex told the Huns to Go Forth when they tried to lure him to Castle Greyskull. I just hope that somewhere down the line there is another person who is willing to resist the big two and not just sell out players and themselves for a quick fix.

I had thought about Alf Ramsey, but couldn't put him in there cos he was dour bugger and his team bent the rules (cheated) to win the WC in 1966 when they moved their semi from Goodison to Wembley when they shouldn't.. thus forcing Portugal (who had won their group at Goodison and were camped in Liverpool) to up-sticks at the last minute.

Re: Who are the top five UK managers of all time?

1 Bob Paisley - just look at his record. Whilst Shankly laid the foundation. Bob Paisley turned Liverpool into the best side in Europe. The most successful club manager ever though Ferguson is catching up.
2 Sir Alex Ferguson - see Bob Paisley. Ruthless bassa of the first order and a brilliant manager. Has build and rebuilt 3 top sides at Old Trafford and no player no matter how powerful they are will ever win against him.
3 Jock Stein -first British manager to win the EC. Shamefully overlooked for a knighthood.
4 Brian Clough - 2 European Cups with Nottingham Forest a deeply unfashionable wee midands club who swept all before them. Fantastic man manager. Very much like Ferguson it was his way or the highway.
5 Sir Matt Busby - Had to rebuild United after Munich and built them into the best side in Europe. His sides always played great football and were packed fiull of United legends.

Really sorry I could not find room for Bill Shankly, Bill Nicholson, Herbert Chapman, Bertie Mee and Hugh Shaw and they are up there with that group.

Don Revie - forget it - Leeds in the 1970s were an anathema to football. Brian Clough was right about them.

Re: Who are the top five UK managers of all time?

Here we go again.

Leeds the dirty cheating team who everyone hates..

It's funny how when people talk about the Revie team that they home in on the negatives all the time without even taking into account what a fabulous football team they could be and what great players they had. Never mind the fact that in 1961 when Revie was appointed they were a wee mid table second division team in Yorkshire, playing in a city that had no interest in football. Despite all this he managed to put together a side with world class players such as Bremner, Giles, Clarke, and Gray. They were a team capable of playing incredible football. By the mid seventies Revie's side had won two league championships, the UEFA Cup twice, the FA Cup and the league Cup.

Leeds took no prisoners. They were a thoroughly modern professional outfit who could certainly dish it out when they had to. But whenever this great team were let of the leash such as the famous 7-0 thrashing of Sheffield United often shown on Match of th Day archives, their brilliance was so compelling it was almost cruel.

I think Revie was an incredibly talented manager, and IMO one of the best Britain has ever had.

Agree with much of what you say about that Leeds outfit - in spite of their unsavoury side they were an incredible football team. What won't go away for me re Revie however are the accusations of match-fixing. I agree with AndyM, Brian Clough was on the whole right about them (although he was no angel himself in other regards).

Revie was also pretty grim an in international manager.

Easliy done.... look at all the others, they turned clubs around and made them great.. a much harder job than steering an already juggernaut club for a few seasons.
