eugenics - time for a rethink?
inpsired by tangent on STF thread....
richard dawkins, amongst others, has argued that eugenics should perhaps be rehabilitated. naturally i'm skeptical but i'm keen to hear the views of more progressive types. clearly effective contraceptive technology has hugely accelerated the dynamics that so frightened HG Wells, George Bernard Shaw and so on. that is to say, that against an overall collapsing european population, it is the 'educated classes' which are disappearing fastest. they are also disappearing in america, where the overall birth rate is holding up. moreover, a declining population will soon struggle for the resources to maintain lives that aren't self-sustaining, and it can surely only be a matter of time before the 'right' to have one's life unencumbered by some poor dribbling relative, is enshrined in law. add to that, the untenability of insuring and investing in people as their genetic 'faults' become identifiable. is it perhaps time to reconsider the eugenics agenda? some of it can be facilitated so much more tastefully these days due to in utero technology, although other aspects are much more challenging. thoughts? Re: eugenics - time for a rethink?
It may have credence but in the real world, it can never be truly implemented. No humans can/should ever have the right to stop or alter another human's natural birth-right, no matter if it meant the end of the world as we know it, IMO.
Surely we just have to accept some aspects of human evolution as inevitable and stop trying to piss about with it to achieve a 'perfection' that is wholly unnatural? Although I concede it has been dicked around with already through contraception and developing countries etc as you allude to in your post To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 5 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. Doesn't mean it should continue and develop much further IMO
