Not that I'm an authority on Spanish names, but I seem to remember that although Cruz (meaning Cross) is a valid name in Spanish, it actually is a female name. He's going to have a hard time at school especially as there'll almost certainly be some spanish speakers there. (Boy named Sue scenario)

The map of the USA is quite interesting.. some states are very "god fearing" and others seem to have a far lower number of church goers, and it tends to be a similar coverage over the whole of each individual state.. however Texas seems to have pockets of godlesness right next to pockets of fanaticism...

I've no idea whether this is right or not, but I would take a guess at the more rural an area is the more religious it is? If that's right I would say that it is probably down to a search for a feeling of community, and in small towns a desire to be seen as not different.

The areas of godlessness I would suspect could well be down to a high rate of internal migration. So University towns (ie Austin, Texas) or areas of high economic growth (ie Silicon Valley) would attract those who wish to get away from somewhere of a religious background.

As I say just a guess, but that would make some form of sense to me.

It's because Texas is such an economic hotspot that people move here for jobs. They buy houses where they work and bring their beliefs with them. It's a good thing.

I wonder if those crackpots did what the NSS praised the Scottish census for doing....asked the two questions, what religion were you raised in and what religion do you now follow. Call me cynical but I bet it was the only the first one when logic (whassat? shouts the ASARB) says the second question is more pertinent.
