Unhealthy Foods/Fat Tax?

So now there is a proposed tax on "Unhealthy" food.

This will no doubt be Chicken Nuggets, Micro-chips, Frozen pizza, et al, The food of the poorest in society.

Will there be a tax on caviar and quail`s eggs? I seriously doubt it.

"It`s to make you healthy, and live longer"

The last thing this government and future leaders need is for us to live longer!

It`s simply unaffordable given the current pension/social security crisis for them to want this.

Isn`t it much easier for them all round for us all to just die younger?

If this was to go through, the poor will still be buying steakbakes etc. anyway.

Quick financial fix to help pay for some recent mis-deeds?

Hit the most needy again?.....It`s always the easiest way.

Lottery also spring to mind?

If they want folk to eat helthier they need to educate children. So, this generation might not be healthy but the next might.

Re: Unhealthy Foods/Fat Tax?

IMO another unlooked at reason why we are all a bit chubbier than our parents generation is the generally sedentary lifestyle that is now led by most.

My dad worked on building sites for the best part of 20 years and doing something like that will tend to keep the weight off you. He's put on a fair bit of weight since stopping that.

Meanwhile I've sat on my arse at a desk for 12 years and got fat. I don't reckon our diets are that dissimilar so the common factor is job.

Obesity is about lack of exercise as much as diet.

Of course it is.
If everyone in Britain gave up booze fags and cars next week do you agree our economy would collapse . ie thousands on the dole and millions of £s lost in tax etc

Yip. Which is why I don't believe governments are serious about this sort of shite other than as publicity.

This has an enormous impact in Finland which used to have the highest heart disease rate in the world. By providing healthy food to kids from nursery on, they established new habits and improved health. Now Scotland has the highest rates of hearts disease.

As a side point, why don't they subsidise healthy food rather than tax unhealthy food (or a bit of both). Interestingly, I was in a hopstial canteen not so long ago where chips were 80p for a colossal plate but salad was £3 for a mangey little box of not very fresh looking leaves and patients recovering from operations were being offered sandwiches for dinner. The government could start there seeing as they run it!!

the same kind of rule seems to apply to bairns too. nowhere to play fitba/other games, ps2's, DS', plonked in front of a DVD all day, fed sh##e, driven to school even though they live less than a mile from school, and they wonder why childhood obesity is expanding.

The missus was in hospital after the birth of our second with pnemonia and what struck both of us was how they seemed to have no concept of the need for recovering bodies to have a good healthy diet. The food was feckin' mingin. We found out that the 'fresh' food that was served was actually cooked in Wales, frozen, sent up in a lorry then reheated. Lovely. I had to take fruit in as there wasn't any.

they do indeed. ERI and the western (I think, only 90% sure about the western) get their meals shipped up from Wales. Astley ainslie cooks its own and all the meals on wheels for Edinburgh, which are utterly revolting. Only St Johns' has proper cooks and the same food you'd find in the restraunt/staff canteen.

Scotlands death rates from heart disease are tumbling very fast.

Folk are gradually quitting the fags, exercising more and eating healthier.

Good. I noticed a real antipathy to veg and salad amongst older folk of every class when I lived there (especially in the west). Hopefully its changign with the younger generations. Weegie Cooncil in particular have done some excellent work to show kids in schools that healthy food is good and persuade them to have a decent school dinner rather than go to the corner shop for a lunch of fags and crisps.
