Thumbs down A Hotel Beside St. Pats ???

Was in the repro shop opposite St. Pats today and asked one of the guys what they were building in the grounds of St. Pats. (First time I've been in the Cowgate for ages and there's a big f*ck off tower crane in front of the church.)

"Oh, it's going to be a hotel, the church sold off a bit of their land," he said.

Re: A Hotel Beside St. Pats ???

Is it at the St. Marys' street side

If it is, maybe the club could see the new owners about a plaque or bench
being placed there commemorating the birth of Hibernians

It is going to be a hotel (dunno why since there is 5 around this location) but as you said above they gave them money for a new church hall which the church has been needing for a few years, my Gran does the accounts for St Pats and apparently it was too good an offer for them to refuse.

Pretty sure that whatever hotel firm has bought it will have done their homework with regards to competition and capacity in their market.

Believe it or not, Edinburgh actually does need more hotel rooms to satisfy demand. Tourism here has been on the increase (overall) for decades and is the 2nd most important sector for bringing cash into the city (behind the banking/financial sector). More hotels please.

I dont think it is to satisfy demand, I actually work for a major hotel in that area and work in the accounts department so know exactly how many rooms we have left to sell and what rooms are available in the city at times. It is a growing market but my point is we are all raising our rooms rates just to beat each other and the customer is the one who ends up losing out, however if they are daft enough to pay £240 room only in August then that is there choice. Yes we bring in a lot of cash but at the end of the day profit is not as important as customer service (don't let my GM read this or I might be sacked!)

You're saying that rates are rising but the increase in rooms is not to satisfy demand?
More rooms mean more competition and thus cheaper rates for the customer. And if I was your GM, I would be saying that good customer service=increase in profit.

With the growing market, more rooms will be needed otherwise prices will rise.

More rooms do not necessarily mean cheaper rates, we are on the verge of adding 30 rooms to ours and I can guarantee we won't be lowering our rates. We are budgeted by our head office on our room rate and amount of rooms sold. Of course it is to satisfy demand, Edinburgh is and always will be a popular place to visit. Of course good customer service means increase in profit but not many GM's see it that way as a few of them are PROFIT PROFIT PROFIT. (not mine of course I want my pay rise this year )

I mean overall, throughout the city- more rooms mean cheaper rates (or at least rates rising less quickly).

As for the profit point- you're right but at the same time the hotel is a business and it exists to make money. Your GM will be judged on the bottom line so he's no doubt anxious to ensure that it is as big as possible.

Yeh I agree throughout the city it is needed just not all at our end of town

He is in charge of 3 of our hotels so his job must be bloody stressful, wouldn't want it for love nor money ! I will do my bit to make sure we make profit !
