Re: Belfast murals
Tremendous. Wish more building ends were turned over to artists here. The only one I can think of is at the bottom of ferry road. These things fair brighten up rather dull buildings.
Funny think is I was thinking of painting some sweet potatoes on some trampy buildings doon gorg*e way ![]() |

Re: Belfast murals
Cheers Conor that's a very interesting and uplifting read. I've always had an interest in how people express themselves and their culture in murals.
I have to say that image of the dove of peaceholds a very powerful message too. |

Re: Belfast murals
It's a subject we've debated a couple of times on here before, but I'd be just as happy if the 'muriels' didn't exist at all: they give paramilitary groups and politicians a means to control people and at times encourage people to wallow in victimhood.

Re: Belfast murals
Bill rolston of Coleraine University edited a couple of interesting photobooks about murals from the 80s; bit odd to see such intensely heartfelt political messages reduced to glossy, coffee table conversational aretfacts for the chattering classes.
Worst mural I ever saw was in a place called Macosquin on way towards Limavady from Coleraine, post 1985 Anglo Irish agreement; UVF shield with "You Have Betrayed the People of Ulster, Margaret THATHER" underneath it. Dyslexic prods rool KO? |

If the loyalist 'movement' had spent more time reading books in prison and less time in the gym they wouldn't have been such a failure in terms of political negotiations and international PR. David Ervine being the exception, of course.

Re: Belfast murals
There's the possibly apochrypal tale of the clear out of the empty H Blocks, which revealed a Republican library stacked with thousands of scholarly books on left-wing political philosophy, from Gramsci to Lenin and all points inbetween, and a loyalist one which stocked only a few bodybuilding mags and "follow! follow!"

Re: Belfast murals
I'm well impressed with this.
Bearing in mind that Londondoire ( ![]() ) has had a problem with homophobic attacks, it sends a good message.
