Donald Findlay

At it again:-

A leading defence QC has been accused of "unacceptable" behaviour after he was reported to have made sectarian comments in an after-dinner speech.

A tribunal of the Faculty of Advocates - the professional body for Supreme Court lawyers - has been hearing evidence against Donald Findlay.

The faculty's complaints committee has already heard the allegations but the QC submitted a written defence.

He has now been accused of bringing the faculty into disrepute.

Anyone know what the joke was?

A number of sick jokes by all accounts, jokes that if they were about blacks or gays would probably have seen him struck off. A pathetic excuse for a man if ever there was one.

You are right about a lot of things Ian but in this case I'm not so sure.

It was the old smoky room 'For fuck sake is that another pope died' routine. Hardly OTT offensive. I agree with earlier posters that in this case it really is PC gone mad. If I was out with work colleagues and made some derogatory comments about HOMFC I wouldn't expect it to go further. My own opinion is that he is an Aunt Sally figure for the handwringing PC brigade and establishment Sellik-minded types to bash and hence you have this scenario.

Interestingly enough Donald Findlay is an athiest, not a Protestant, but an athiest.
In many respects he's a tool such as in his choice of football team, pished sing-songs and political party but he is a brilliant advocate of the law and if I was ever up on a murder trial I'd want him defending me.

Agree. And imagine the kerfuffle if it had been about the Muslims or Sikhs.

Stupid teenager uses the N word on national TV and is crucified by the media from red tops to quality press and everyone inbetween.Brilliant advocate makes anti Catholic jokes in public and ........ lets just say considerably less hostility.

It will be very interesting to see the facultys ruling.

i agree mostly. this is ludicrous oppressive pc madness.

i don't see why it's interesting he's an athiest though. it's actually less surprising than if we was an actual serious prod.

Re: Donald Findlay

I can't stand the man.

So on that basis he should be punished to the max.

Hangings too good etc etc.

However, it was just a couple of lame jokes and if it had been anyone else I would have said it was a total over-reaction to hunt him for it. Bad taste jokes maybe, but so what. I've already said my piece on bad taste jokes on the Dead Bernie thread and I'm in the minority I think. (So no doubt as a minority Bernie would have me in his sights! )

But since it was Donald he should be shot, drawn and quartered and then hung. And even that is too good for him.

the hitchens are barmy - if also fantastically erudite. christopher the atheist who writes the hatchet job on mother t, and peter the christian who does likewise with the (secular saint) nelson mandela.

you have to wonder where all the animus comes from. to me they're a perfect demonstration that there is a 'fanatic' psyche, and the form it takes - religious, political, secular or whatever, is just the channel for that.

that said, i find CH far more engaging than dawkins and was considering his new book, but it got panned in a review i read on sunday (in the tory graph if anyone wants to look it up), which highlighted errors so profound that it suggests that he has a poor grasp on the subject he's writing about.

i suspect he has a general antipathy to religion, but hasn't studied the subject and had to do a rush job on that so he could write a polemic.

tbh - and i'm not being sarcastic; i doubt hitchens or dawkins for that matter, are much superior in their argument to some of the bounce atheist massive. so i figure why bother read them when you can engage with fellas on here.
