Gordon Smith wants to shake up the league by introducing a new format.

Personally i think we should give it a try.

Re: Smiths Vision

That sounds about the most economically viable plan I've heard for restructuring the league. It's still not ideal, but it does sound like an improvement on what we have at the moment.

Im no keen on his idea, im a firm believer of a 16 team league play each team twice (home and away obviously) with a two up two down relegation system..

Along those lines might be ok but realistically we probably wouldn't have a 1st division team ever winning the 1st/split division again.
We'd also have to restructure the whole of football to fit this in to keep the other teams in the 1st division with something to play for.

Only 30 games though and you'd still have the same amount of meaningless games due to the top teams having even more points due to playing against even weaker opposition.
League cup on a saturday to fill in gaps,Aye?

Assuming the same average crowds, prices would need to increase by around 25% to cover the decrease in games to get the same amount of cash in. Season tickets would cost something around the same for 4 less games, and the average price for getting in would be near £30. This is completely ignoring the fact that instead of 6 home games against the OF and Hearts we'd have 3 and the average crowds would be lower, and that's assuming the same number of folk go despite the increased prices. Financial suicide I'm afraid.

Al, either your arithmetic is on annual leave or you've been smoking that funny stuff again.

See below. The percentage loss of games against the bigots and yams is 0% the percentage of total home games lost [from the 19 we have now] is approximately 5.12364423%

Unless I am sadly mistaken, in the present league format we play 38 games [assuming parity then thats 19 home and 19 away]. In the new set up if it went ahead we would play 36 games [18 home and 18 away] and making the obvious assumption that we would be top 8 when the split occurred we would play the bigot brothers and the corgis the same number of times home and away as we do now. The only difference I can see with the new league set up would be that if we had a really bad year and were struggling to make the split we would be aiming for top 8 instead of top 6.

Dude, I was talking about StickyRickys suggestion for a 16 team league. I think the proposed set up would be okay tbh.

Re: Smiths Vision

Something has to be done because the current set up is mince.I would also like it to be more radical by awarding away wins with an extra point. The game is about winning and IMO you should be rewarded for attacking teams in their own middens. This idea might be crud regarding Hibs as we're no the best travellers

Personally i think we should give it a try.

It seems like a much better system than the one we have right now.

The minus point is that it still leaves us with 2 teams too many in the SPL.

And they both play in Glasgow.

Exactly right, the real problem in Scotland is two very large clubs playing against a lot of smallish ones. Until that is fixed the problems will remain. To be fair to Smith, there's little he can do about that, and his proposals do make a lot of sense.

we should be intoducing summer football in this country. parks empty all summer, unplayable all winter. then the powers that be blame grass roots football for not developing the talent.

Sounds like an interesting idea. Not too radical but the chance of 4 teams down and 4 up in the bottom section may be
interesting.

But the Hibs, Hearts, Aberdeens and Dundee Utds will want their two home games against the OF and the derbies. Going back to that system would only work if they went back to the old gate allocation system which existed then as well - equal shares. The OF will not agree to that as it has been a major reason for their economic dominance since 1975.

But does it matter that they wouldn't agree, since they'd be outvoted? What could they do... leave? :YAYYY:

More likely the rest would bend over and take it up the tail pipe like they usually do.

I don't know the date when they stopped splitting gate money, but it was most certainly later than 1975 cause I can mind of it. I think it was early-mid 80s, which not so coincidentally was the time when the OF were last not winning the league every fecking year.
