Stingy Footballers

STINGY Chelsea—one of the richest footie clubs in the world — REFUSED to help hard-up nurses.

Despite earning a whopping £114 million in wages last season, not a SINGLE player parted with just a day's mega pay for the May Day For Nurses campaign.

Even England skipper John Terry— who earns over £100,000 a WEEK—kept his wallet shut. Of all the 556 Premiership players asked to help with the scheme, only 225 contributed.

The campaign has raised £750,000 for a hardship fund to help poorly paid nurses if they get into financial trouble.

And it could have been more but the league's other rich clubs were just as bad as tight-fisted Chelski, owned by billionaire Roman Abramovich.

Despite helping launch the appeal, Man United champions Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville failed to persuade any other teammates to shell out.

Another campaign supporter, Arsenal striker Thierry Henry, only managed to get two other Gooners on board.

Scousers Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher parted with cash along with ten other Liverpool players.

But the biggest Premiership hearts belong to Fulham, Reading, West Ham and relegated Watford who made their ENTIRE squads donate a day's pay.

A basic grade nurse earns just £19k a year—next season Premiership wages will break the £1billion barrier.

Campaign founder Noreena Hertz said: "I simply can't explain the lack of generosity. It's not too late—Chelsea players can still approach me."

From the News of the World.

What do you reckon? You could say that they pay 40% tax and could therefore expect the government to create a hardship fund to alleviate the problem caused by the fact it underpays its own employees. On the other hand, they earn far more than they are worth so could feel responsible to use some of that cash to do some good like Useless de la Cruz.

I'm on that side dude. Rio Ferdinand £110,000.00 per week for what, basically a useless twat that got talked up until he earns super star money for being pretty ordinary. None of these guys are worth the money [supply and demand afficionados please kick in about now]. I banged on about this and the 'short career myth' in another thread a few weeks ago. People say that RP is a scrooge because players ONLY get £2.5K per week before bonuses. What bolloxs, hands up any supporters who earn that kind of money.

As Peirre Van Hoidonk said "The average man in the street wouldnt get out his bed for £7k a week"

Hes got a point mind :dub31:

Not any more. It used to be but now they have to pay for their own degree and come out with the same types of debts as other students. There are also very few jobs available and nurses are being made redundant. See the NHS, see save with Labour!!

Thats fair enough but i can never work out why nurses should be treated any differently than other underpaid workers (if you count 19,000 a year underpaid)

19K is not a bad starting wage. Architects and surveyors start on around £22-24K I read the other day and thats the private sector. Their wages go up pretty quickly though - don't know if its the same in the NHS especially after Agenda for Change (e.g. Unison take it up the arse from a labour government)

Getting a University education can really pay off - especially if you get something that leads to a professional job with entry restricted by a professional body.

I'm not suggesting they shouldn't get a better wage , they do a great job but i think asking others to give like a charity is out of order . Footballers are paid obscene amounts nowadays but i think branding them stingy is wrong

Re: Stingy Footballers

I think there's something obscene about this bint disclosing who has or hasn't given to charity. This 'charity' has been started by this self publicist and she's hit on the idea of targetting football to attempt to get competition between donors.

Her site even has a league table of which clubs' fans have given most.

Charity should be anonymous. No class but what do you expect from somebody called Hertz?

I see she's an author - watch out for the book!

Oh well, that's that mystery solved.

What football stars do or do not give to charity is their own business. If I had a zillion pounds and wanted to give it to charity I wouldnae be publicising it....who wants to be a "look at me look at me I'm dead nice I give to charity" kind of person??

I would agree. Over conspicuous charity is rather suspicious.

Ah. So the likelihood is that she's hypocritical enough to disclose others' supposed "stinginess" in order to make some money herself. Leaves rather a nasty taste in the mouth.

Also I'd be interested in the opinion of those on here who know about the profession - is there really much genuine hardship among nurses these days? It seems unlikely to me in a job that starts on 19k, but admittedly I don't know a lot about it
