..even then it had probably had it;s predecessors - and I doubt the genuis that was Johnny Cash was one of them, far too much of a Gospel influence in his stuff - like Jerry Lee he was caught up in investigating the darker side of that music.

After The Kingsmen etc it's a straight line to The MC5, The Stooges (Iggy played drums occasionally for The Kingsmen) the (fantastic) New York Dolls, Pere Ubu, The Ramones, Television then accross the Atlantic with those Sex Pistols and The (underrated) Damned.

Nothing was invented in CBGB's, all those adopted the attitude (correctly) but none of them can claim originality.

There's maybe been one or two bands with that attitude since, The Fall, KLF - but that's it as far as I can see. All those three-chord spikey haired copyists in the 80's and 90's totally missed the point.

Green Day as Punk as the Brotherhood Of Man in my house, laughable.

Louie Louie is one of the best rock n roll songs ever imho. So many people have done it so many ways and it's always feckin cool as fuck.

BTW I've been looking (unsuccessfully) online for an article in this month's mojo magazine which i flicked through in tesco's - i so wanted you to see it, just cos i know you'd piss yourself. it's one of these 'most important record' ever wankfest's. you want to see what greil marcus has to say about the pistols GSTQ. if ever someone missed the point.

- I also enjoy reading Marcus but only because he talks so much shoite, his Pistols stuff is always a case looking far too hard for something that is obviously in yer face.

At the end of that list I thought "Wot? No Fall"- their early 80's sound is all over the place and has been for the last 12 years or so ie Pavement are Fall copyists and Blur are Pavement copyists. It's weird that Pop Music now is so influenced by what was completely uncommercial in the 80's, what's weirder is that MES predicted it when he said.....

Thank feck I lived through it when it was in the hot-house of post-punk freshness, it alll sounds too much like an affectation these days. Then again I'm too busy tracking down Rotary Connection albums to be bothered by the pointy-haired at the mo'.

I preffered it when hair was spikey rather than pointy, although there were plenty pointy-haired ****s back then as well, don't see too many spikey-haired people just now if you know what I mean.

Mojo's letters page makes the Daily Express's look open-minded. Hilarious.

I've sort of cut-down on checking mags at the local library/nation'sfavouritesupermarket.

Whenever i was in the tesco's at canonmills I found myself checking the re-issues page of Mojo, it's pretty good. As well as their usual beardly-weirdly crew of favourites getting space there's always news of really good soul, ska and reggae, good beardy-weirdy stuff, in fact it's open minded as feck for a music mag.

For the most part in their main and current sections they concentrated for ages on the usual beatlesrollingstonespinkfloydbobdylan formula but their back pages are really eclectic and ahem "colourful" - Which leads me to say sometimes I reckon that white-journo-muso-the60'swerethebest types like their black artists dead.

There's a sort who have "What's Going On" and "Exodus" and who believe they are huge Marvin Gaye/BobMarley fans -- yet even though they are mainly beatlesrollingstonespinkfloydbobdylan fans they'll still have every and any record by all the third tier heavy metal bands, but like, two albums by black dudes. The grizzly haired bastards are missing out if you ask me.

Saying that recently Mojo has had great stuff on Joy Division, Post-Punk, James Brown (when he died!!), and New York Dolls, .

was recently listening to a version of pretty vacant that i got on a punk compo, and which i've probably already got on spunk and always skipped. skipped cos i never liked it as it was too poppy for my taste - like something generation x should have done. but this version prooves your point about matlock's contribution, the thing is transformed into a krautrock monster - intro has that motorik rhythm, with the wee poppy motif repeated throughout so it become less of a pop pay off, and more a remorseless kraut style locked in groove. quality.

In my view the sonics were the first real punk band. Attitude, flare, great tunes....thye had everything. Quality band.
