PC gone mad.

Anyone see the metro today?

There was an article about stuff being produced by the thought police in charge of indocr...er education in scotland. latest addition to the charge sheet is the new racist crime of looking at a muslim.

yes, that's right; if your child subjects a muslim to an 'unsolicited look' then s/he is a wee nazi, understand?

as is the pattern of these things, the muslim community seems as stunned and appalled as every other sane person by this nonsense.

you've got to wonder how these things happen. how do these people get a budget (which we fund natch) and why are they let near our children?

ps - i've tried to find this on the metro site to no avail.

Haven't seen the article dude but i'm not surprised.

Does that mean if a muslim kid looks at a non muslim kid in a 'funny' way that they're some kind of mini mujahidin?

no; it's part of muslims identity apparently, to be thus disposed to being looked at.

which seems to have been news to the muslim groups quoted, who seemed to view it all as a load of bollocks, although they were much more polite in their mode of expression.

still, what do they know; these wee brown chaps get lost without the high priests of whitey liberalism to keep em on the straight and narrer, and tell them what they really feel.

Oh dear EGB's off on one again. Not to let the facts get in the way of a story, it refers to staring at other kids (say wearing a hajib) can make them uncomfortable. Not looking - staring.

I'm sure you don't mean this as it reads, but in any event, did you know anything about this and who wrote before you pronounced?

I'd been wondering how long before you showed up Archie.

And i'm sticking to the facts ma'am. The story makes the point about how you cannot expect children not to find someone in a burqa etc strange and thus something they're bound to look at / stare at. not unless you're from the ministry of correct thinking that is.

this is my point archie. if you're unhappy with the wording, then fine, but don't use it to eel round the point; i looked for the article online (nor do i have it front of me) and if i could have found it i'd have quoted it, i'm not trying to dodge any aspect of it.

unlike your good self who doubts the phenomena of pc madness and asks for examples only to fire up chaff or disappear when you get em

long and short of it, branding kids racists because they look at somebody in an
'unsolicited ' way or stare at them, is orwellian.

that depends if you're getting the sarcasm in it or not. the point i'm making is the condescending attitude of patrician racism.

i don't know what the rest of your sentence means? i read this in the metro - that's where i found out about it. it's evocative of any number of other stories, that illustrate the same attitude.

The point is - it's from an anti-bullying resource - which has been very successfully used in schools, somebody sells a travesty of a story to the press and you grab it hook line and sinker. The point about who wrote it referred to the guidance - do you know anything about who put it together?

I'm having to head out - but you'll find it in the Scottish Exec anti-sectarianism resource. Is anti-sectarianism PC gone mad too?

Re: PC gone mad.

The policy is from Learning and Teaching Scotland, and it is very real. The document says: “Some Muslims may choose to wear clothing or display their faith in a way that makes them visible. For example, women may be wearing a headscarf, and men might be wearing a skullcap. Staring or looking is a form of discrimination as it makes the other person feel uncomfortable, or as though they are not normal.”

http://www.ltscotland.org.uk/antisec...ctarianism.asp

For me, that is a quite ridiculous statement to make. "Staring or looking" is something that happens every day to all people in all walks of life. What on earth is going on in the Scottish education system? Egb thinks its crazy, I think it's crazy.... and guess who else does? Osama Saeed, a spokesman for the Muslim Association of Britain, accused officials of going too far. “There are far more serious elements of Islamophobia. People look at all sorts of things — that can just be a glance. A glance and a stare are two different things — glances happen naturally when all sorts of things catch your eye whereas a stare is probably gawking at something.

“Personally I have not encountered much of a problem with people staring. I don’t know how you legislate for that.” Indeed.

If you don't look at someone you have to ignore them - is ignoring discriminatory?

Consiously having to think about Muslims more than other people so as not to discriminate is itself discriminatory shirley? This a good example of "PC gone mad" although I hate the fact that people use this sort of thing to rubbish anything that is seen as PC simply to justify their own xenophobic/racist/sexist/whatever attitudes.

As with most of these types of policy, if the people entrusted with it's upkeep use some small degree of common sense, there shouldn't be any problems. I don't think there will be any expulsions for just staring or looking at anyone, although it only takes one idiot to take an extreme interpretation of the policy.....

Surely the reaction would be explaining to kids who don't understand why someone is wearing something unusual to them what that is, rather than punishing them? I suspect strongly that this is either being misinterpreted or is badly written.

BTW what would the reaction be from EGB if some person was staring at someone carrying Rosary beads Presumably that would be part of the ingrained Scottish culture of anti-catholicism whilst this is just PC gone mad

edit: Just read the guideline bit. It's hardly PC gone mad! It's saying that staring at someone can make them feel uncomfortable (which is true). It doesn't say what it means by staring, but I suspect a quick glance is not what they have in mind! Read that in context of the rest of the document, and it is a clumsy phrase, but it's placement alongside physical and verbal abuse of people suggests it's not the way it's being intepreted here (or in the Metro at all).

Good job I don't find people staring at me uncomfortable, every time I go out on the streets of Georgia in my kilt I am discriminated against on a massive scale.
