Has this news item been discussed at all in the UK ?

Briefly: Don Imus, a US radio "shock jock" referred to a female basketball team as “nappy-headed hos.” on his show. This has been causing such a stink in the mainstream media here I just wondered if it had been talked about in the UK. There is much debate going on about the incident and Don Imus appears to be off the air now due in no small part to the hysteria of the usual suspects, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton.

The CBS chief executive, Leslie Moonves, met yesterday afternoon with the Rev. Al Sharpton and the Rev. Jesse Jackson, leaders in what became a national movement to remove Mr. Imus from the air in the wake of his comments disparaging members of the Rutgers women’s basketball team. saw a snippet on the telly - they wouldnt even say what he said, so i was left none the wiser.

anyway, seems like people don't want too much 'shock' from their jocks these days.

incidentally, shouldnt the same opprobrium be getting directed at any number of rappers?

Funnily enough I heard a statement from Al Sharpton saying that he was going to start attacking rappers with the same venom as he had Imus because he felt that they legitimized it.

A lot of the debate has been around the (perceived ?) double standard. It is quite interesting to see it being batted about. One deflection put out has been that the vast majority of gangsta rap is consumed by wiggers (white suburbanites) and gang rap is rejected by the mainstream balck community.

That has become a point of debate as the number 1 and number 2 record on the American "urban" charts both use degoratory terms regarding females and have held these spots as the most purchased records for quite some time.

Not to mention both Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson's track regarding regarding their use of derogatory terms to people of Jewish background. Sharpton's record during the Tawana Brawley debacle is deplorable at best and how he gets to speak on anything with any credibility escapes me.
