Because, in the same way that you've decided that these people are 'oddballs' I (on the basis of the opinions I have formed through my life experiences) have decided that there is a possibility that these are the kind of people who in the 40 States in question are likely to have double standards where family values and patriotism (amongst other things) are concerned.

fair enough on the question / statement point. If you remember, I originally responded to Dub's somewhat more emphatic position.

there's also no double standards automatically involved in family values v patriotism, nor in family values and, erm, un-patriotism.

i'll not grind the axe any further, but my concern here is that these stereotypes, perpetuated endlessly in our own media, are exactly the kind of demonisation that is used to seperate the world into them and us and oil the wheels of any conflict.

anyway, back to the main point and the article quoted by colr - weirdos.

Funny you should mention that. I stumbled onto alt.uk.politics the other day from a link. Its been some time since I bothered with usenet as it seem dominated by small penised individuals taking advantage of the anonymity of the internet to give people abuse.

Anyway, I was appalled by the level of anti-semitic bile that I found there. The whole place seems riddled with bigots. Feeling decidedly unclean by the experience, I vowed not to return.

Surprised me.

I think in the first instance I responded to you because it's easy to fall into either camp on issues such as this, imo when people ask for factual evidence to support somebody's 'opinion or viewpoint' they're invariably baiting, there's not going to be any factual evidence to support opinions on either side of this debate and you know it!

Dub used the word 'Undoubtedly', in my interpretation that says that he's sure of himself and he has formed this opinion without doubt. A pedant may indeed wish to ask for justification of such a bold statement but I'm generally happy to let it ride.

On the other point, I think once again there are some wires crossed, its not a family values versus patriotism (quite obviously imo!), they were the 2 headings which I chose to start a much longer list of ideals which may be used or abused as people see fit.

Admittedly I would say that to Stereotype the whole of 'rural' America as War loving, incestuous Bible bashers would be completely out of order, but I didn't say that!
