census: do you have irish roots

with reference to some of the spouting of hibby huns lately, i'm conducting this poll.

can you trace irish roots on either side of your family (or indeed, are irish yourself). this has nothing to do with religion, whether your catholic, prod or atheist is entirely beside the point of the question.

Re: census: do you have irish roots

I voted Yes before fully reading the question (I only read; do you have Irish roots). My dads' folks were both second generation Irish his mother Cathoic and his father Protestant. My dad went with being a proddie but has since lost his faith/woken up (in my opinion).
However my mums folks are of Shetland & Norwegian decent, both catholic.

Irish on my Dad's side, County Cork I think. Not sure how many generations removed from the old country though, a fair few. Family always Protestant as far as I know, but none of us go near a Church bar weddings and funerals, I'm an Atheist myself.

Re: census: do you have irish roots

the poll - and responses - thus far, reflect my suspicions; namely that there is a considerable degree of continuity in the support today, in terms of the club's origins in the irish community, and that this has probably been lost in previous polls that have focussed on catholicism. as has been noted by others, there's a huge difference between prod and orange, and also our many atheists of irish descent would demur from ticking the catholic box.

all this is of course to an extent incidental, and those without a drop of irish blood are as central to hibbiedom as those with. at the risk of being premature, it is however, i think, a bit of a rebuke to the hibby huns, and maybe a bit of a correction to their world view; ie tis they who are the (vanishingly) small component of our support base

Re: census: do you have irish roots

I think a lot of you middle aged Hibbies have grown up with Irish grannies, I'm of the generation who've got long gone 'great' or 'great great' Irish grannies. In my book that makes me as Irish as a pint of Guinness poured in Tamsons. Interesting to know where it came from but not that relevant to my life today.

I also think that's why a lot of older Hibees have a antipathy towards Celtic while everyone I know around my age or younger despises them equally with Rangers.

Re: census: do you have irish roots

on my dads side.

i wonder what kind of results you'd get with hearts supporters if you asked them the same question? obviously not everyone supports hibs because of our clubs' irish roots but are people in edinburgh who do have irish roots (and who dont support celtic) attracted to hibs/put off hearts?

1. so your answer is 'yes' then?

2. do you really mean 'antipathy'?

ps - I think older hibbies hate rangers more because we travelled to ibrox in the 70s and 80s.

very very distant but they are there....

nothing tangable...you'd find irish blood in a sizable population of families from west scotland...I don't have edinburgh roots as such family moved to leith just before I was born

1. How far do you want to go back? We've all got 'roots' from several foreign countries in our D.N.A.

2. 'God Save The Queen' gets booed every time its struck up by away fans at Easter Road, the 'Soldier Song' is greeted with silence. Both have no place in Scotland in a non-international match. I mentioned it the other day but some folk listed top 10 clubs they hated which included teams like Lazio, Real Madrid, Chelsea, Airdrie, Man United etc but no Celtic. Why?

as far back as the formation of the club seems as good a rule as in any in this context?

I dunno - many (cyber) hibbies are lefties perhaps? the common denominator between the teams you've listed is that they're seen as 'right wing' which is probably largely generalising hokum, but that's football supporters for you. the exception is manure and they're probably hated as the poster-child for football PLC.

But in any case, my point was I don't think you meant 'antipathy' - that means dislike or hostility, and doesn't really fit with what I thought you were trying to say. did you mean 'affinity'?
