why is a football season called a season

there are four seasons in a year and fruit and veg come into and go out of season- but the football season covers about 9 months, a majority of the year, so why is it called a season?

A season is just a way of describing a period of time, traditionally for football the 9 months from August to May

It's more than just a period of time. It's a period of time which repeats each year for the same reason hence 'season' There is a season for fishing because trout breed at the same time every year.

Any period of time which repeats each year is a season. Like the festive season.

Re: why is a football season called a season

Ahh good!! the confusion for me lay in the fact the football season takes so long - in season longer than out of season..

OK why is a shy (throw in) called a shy?

and where does the word shan come from? (to be nasty towards)

Shy is the noun for using a swift motion to throw something

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/shy

Shan I haven't got a clue on at the moment

I've never heard the word shy being used in England.

I'm guessing bye kick comes from cricket. A bye being a wide delivery in cricket just as you get a bye kick in football when your opponent shots wide.

I always thought shan meant rubbish.

"See the Yams - theyre shan"

Or it could relate to this mob below

Quote:
The Shan have inhabited the Shan Plateau and other parts of modern-day Myanmar as far back as the 1200s. They are believed to have migrated from the mountains of Yunnan in China. The Shans are descendants of the oldest branch of the Tai ethnicity, known as Tai Long (Great Tai). Shan who migrated to the south and now inhabit modern-day Laos and thailand are known as Tai Noi (or Tai Nyai) while those in part northern Thailand and part of northwest laos are known as Tai Noi Little Tai.(lao spoken) [1]

The Shan kingdom of Mongnaw existed as early as the 900s, but in the 1000s, King Anawrahta of the Pagan kingdom forced the kingdom to become a vassal state. However, in 1284, the Chinese, under Kublai Khan pillaged Pagan, and the Shan gained power throughout modern-day Myanmar, expanding as far south as Mawlamyaing, as far west as Rakhine State, and as far east as Assam.[1] This rapid expansion proved to be deleterious; territories in Laos and Thailand broke off to form the kingdom of Siam and constant warfare weakened the kingdom, which ended in 1604 following the death of San Hum Hpa.[1]

The Shan States disintegrated, forming smaller semi-autonomous kingdoms in the Shan Plateau, which were conquered during the rule of Burmese king Alaungpaya. After the British conquered Burma under the rule of King Thibaw, the Shan kingdoms were transferred to British control. During colonial administration, the Shan principalities were administered as separate colonies by the British, as protectorates with limited monarchial powers given to Shan saohpas.[2]

I know they call it the touchline because in the early days when the ball went out of play, the first player to touch the ball got taking the throw in.

I like that rule...no time wasting anyone with that on.

shan - I'm sure it means to be unfair/rubbish towards.

"It's shan what jade and jo did to shilpa"

"Shy" has been cleared up.

"Shan?" ........ never heard of it. Just a recently invented bit of slang is my guess.

Shan's been around all my lifetime. It's Edinburgh vernacular, as a verb it means cruel or can be used as just crap. Kenny's Jade/Shipa example is good, you could also say that Jade's boob job is totally shan, which it is although there are folks who think any boob job is barry.

I've no idea where it comes from but wouldn't be surprised if there were similar words in Scandinavia.

I once did a course in basic Danish (long story!) when I lived in Aberdeen and was shown that all the Aberdonian words, and a good few Scottish words, were repeated in Danish (and, presumably, similar languages).
