The Sex Pistols- Never mind the bollocks

I bought it recently and i think its brilliant. Anyone else a fan of the Pistols? Did any of you lot see them live? Their gigs were by all accounts pretty crazy.

Re: The Sex Pistols- Never mind the bollocks

got the album... thought it was wildly overrated... though didn't have the advantage of seeing/hearing it at teh time of release... probably had a major impact at the time... due to nothing else out then sounding anything like it...

Re: The Sex Pistols- Never mind the bollocks

Gotta disagree MagicParMan-it sounds like a cross between The Stooges and the New York Dolls with a huge pinch of The Who.

Nevermind that though it's a glorious album. Loads of bootlegs appearing of the Pistols which reveal them to be a brilliant band. "Live At Screen on The Green" and "Savage Young Pistols" puts paid to the myth that they couldn't play back then and the official "Filthy Lucre Live" from the 1990's tour shows what a powerful band they remain. That thread where Oasis are claimed to have been influenced by Pink Floyd is nonsense if you just listen to them, Noel himself says the Pistols where a huge influence on them and you can hear that coming through on alomost every track they do.

If you get the chance, see the Pistols documentary, "The Filth and the Fury". Absolutely superb stuff, with some fantastic footage. Rotten's anger and tears at the end when talking about the death and exploitation of Sid Vicious is a particularly powerful moment.

I'll back up Snoots there about the Oasis influence. Nowhere more blatant than in Liam's vocals, which he admits himself.

My knowledge of the Pistol's doesn't stray past 'Bollocks' but its a topper of a record. Raw and under-produced, its an absolute classic. Riiiiiiiiiiiiight.

Re: The Sex Pistols- Never mind the bollocks

Ali - you took the post right out of my fingertips! That filmumentary is something I must watch at least once a week.

In my opinion, The Sex Pistols are the second greatest rock n roll band ever. Second only to The Beatles. If you're interested, the third group in my ultimate musical triumvirate is The Stone Roses, who share with the Pistols the fact that they only really did one fantastic album.

I love virtually all punk music:
The Clash
The Damned
The Buzzcocks
The Stranglers
The Undertones
The Dead Kennedys
The Exploited
The Ramones
Stiff Little Fingers
Sham 69
Cockney Rejects
and many others.

But.....The Sex Pistols were, are, always number one in the Punk Rock hit parade.

Getting back to that film, the beginning, for someone like me (born in 1971) who remembers the late 70s and the Queen's Silver Jubilee as a small child is so evocative. I particularly like the 'Rock 'n' Roll Years' type footage of football hooligans rioting whilst the strains of 'Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep' play in the back ground.

Wonderful, wonderful stuff. So evocative. That film is about more than The Sex Pistols, it's a picture postcard that captures life for adolescent Britons in the 1970s.

Christ, there are times I wish I'd been born a decade earlier.

It's raw but I'll counter the under-produced thing, expecially when listened to next to their peers. Throughout 1977 they could hardly get a gig anywhere, so Steve Jones spent months in the studio working on NMTB, some of those tracks have 20 or 30 overdubbed guitars, it's what gives it it's power. That and the fact it's compressed to fuck, which makes it all the more searing. Some people at the time thought it was overproduced, if you hear S.P.U.N.K. Rock (aka No Future) the band sound more like they did on stage.

Thing with NMTB is that there is hardly any bass. Jones plays it all (cept Anarchy and God Save The Queen which is Matlock) as Sidney didn't have the chops for the studio. Some think the compression was done to disguise the lack of bass.

Sex Pistols are an entirely different proposition with Matlock playing, more funky some say almost R&B in a Who/Faces Stylee.

Some might say i've not been around long enough to give my opinion but al give it anyway...The Sex Pistols are great! The album 'never mine the bollocks' is one of the all time greats. They sit in second as one of my favourite bands as The Specials and The Jam share first place in my list

Steve Jones and Glen Matlock are more talented than the average guy in the street would reckon. Rotten and Vicious very much became the image of the Pistols for a long time.

Being a big Iggy fan, some of the stuff Iggy done with Jones and Matlock was excellent.

Probably - I mean your probably right rather than that's probably your opinion.

Re: The Sex Pistols- Never mind the bollocks

They were booked to appear in Clouds disco as I remember - and they were going to get £1,000 for it - wow! Not clear why it didn't happen - I suspect it was less to do with Edinburgh Council and more to do with the tour collapsing.

I remember the excitment of the singles and bought Spunk just before Bollocks came out. The album left me a bit cold to be honest, but only because nothing could live up to the build up of those three glorious singles.

I see Spunk has been officially issued. I'm sticking to the scratchy vinyl boot thanks.

It's right up there with the Clash documentary "From the Westway to the World" for me. The sight of Strummer overcome with emotion at the end is something that will always stay with me.

My pal phoned me last night to say that the New York Dolls are playing in Atlanta later this month. I'd love to go, but it's too close to our Christmas visit to Scotland to justify the outlay. And it's on a school night.....jeez, I'm getting old!
