Despite dramatic reduction in youth unemployment and record levels of tertiary education, britain's teenagers are amongst the most troubled in yoorop. They're among the most -

- Delinquent
- Likely to self harm
- Obese

Also;

- They are more consumerist than American peers
- Kids from countries with a catholic culture or a scandinavian communitarian culture do better

Sounds like we should scrap faith schools and support for marriage.

I see that Polly Toynbee has the answer to all this in this morning's guardian - blame thatcher (for new labour's youth), and pour more money into social services. Quelle surprise.

What Polly seems to have overlooked, is that in their;

- Lack of respect for or deference to - or even recognition of - any forms of authority
- Domestic environment liberated - quite literally - of the patriarchal family model
- Freedom from any archaic social influence from religion, or other forms of restraining social taboo
- Rights and welfare entitlement awareness

Then what we have here are in fact the fulfillment of the social theory of Polly's generation of liberal intellegentsia. Well done Polly, your 'new men' are a credit to you and as long as there is money to keep pumping in, you can close your eyes to the nihilism.

Its is somewhat funny that if you asked American's regarding the state of American youth I would imagine their response would be similiar to that of the UK parents. Particulary regarding the points of consumerism and hanging around with their peers. However here due to the ease and availibility of owning or at least using a motorcar it takes on a different meaning.
