I need some clarification here egb so correct me where I have gone astray. According to a book you've just read, someone in the anc; a collegue of Nelson Mandela told a police officer after being detained for drink driving that once Mandela is dead then they (referring to the anc) will come after all white authority figures and kill you. Or was the remark made to reference all white South Africans?

The country is pretty phucked as it is. I spent the first fortnight of October there and crime is out of control. Thankfully aside from an attempted pickpocketing in Durban which I managed to repel I was OK, but I was very fortunate.

If this nutjob gets elected as president then that would signal the end of democracy in South Africa in my opinion:

Nice to visit, but not to live there. If I did I'd most certainly buy a shooter - far too many instances of houses being broken into and the male shot while the female is raped. I was talking to a girl in Jo'burg airport while waiting for my flight home who was leaving the country for good. Her sister had woken up at 4am the month before to find six hooded men with guns pointed at her in her bedroom. I could guess what happened next.

the inference - or at least the one i took - was the latter. the book is 'world on fire' by amy chau.
