For what it is worth the person the BBC signed to present the American version of Top Gear is mate of Burbank Hibee's and mine and Hibee supporter himself.

you live by the sword you die by the sword - all that fetishising of obscene monster supercars and laddishness has caught up with the cheeky wee chappy - seriously hope he pulls through and then dedicates his life to helping those young idiots who have seriously damaged themselves and others on the road.

280-300mph crash....

A Firefighter at the scene claimed Hammond was able to speak as they were working on the car, hope he pulls through.

Theres a feckin difference to driving a run of the mill car at huge speeds - to driving a Jet powered dragster at an ex-RAF base or private grounds. One of the most twatish comments ive read of late.

Re: top gear bloke seriously hurt in car crash

I am sorry if I have offended the sensitive amongst you but as someone whose life has been affected by lunatics on the road I don't have much sympathy for the Jeremy Clarkson's and Richard Hammond's of this world and the whole "lads in fast cars" scene they represent. I quite like the guy and clearly hope he recovers (and more so than the friend of mine who will never recover), and also driving a rocket car on an airfield is clearly not driving a sooped up Astra at 70 in a 30 zone (is he qualified in rocket car driving or is this yet another Top Gear bit of lunacy? BBC might need to take a long hard look) but there is no doubt that he and I disagree fundamentally on the value of supercars, rocket cars, on slagging off speed limits, the environment etc. etc. and everything else that goes on on Top Gear.

Still, I am pleased to hear this morning that his condition has improved.

Tend to agree with arthur on this.Hammond is a likeable cheeky wee chappy and I'm sure everyone wishes him a speedy recovery, but driving cars with jet engines has predictable results.I think he's a father of 3 kids too...maybe not the smartest thing for a dad to do.

I like Top Gear as a programme too, but sometimes they could do features on less testosterone fueled topics.

I, like everyone else was pleased to hear that Richard's condition has improved to 'stable' this morning. I wish the lad a speedy and full recovery.

Re. the above comment by SH, I agree and actually think some of the better quality items on the program don't revolve around velocity and I think they should exploit that angle more. I guess I'm thinking here of the hilarious 'land yacht' episode which was by far the funniest thing I've seen on Top Gear.

I've got to say I agree with every word of that. The three presenters use licence fee money to do very responsible stuff like tell people the best way to vandalise speed

s. It's not smart and Clarkson is the biggest ringpiece of the lot.

Oh, and I hate these contrived pieces where they race across Europe and the fast car incredibly always beats public transport with seconds to spare.

good post (and having just read your second one I agree with that as well) I am not exactly risk adverse either and obviously there wasnt much danger of others being injured in this particular stunt - hope he pulls through but if you fly with the eagles you have to be prepared to one day hit the ground with a bump.

So are you saying that this comment applies to the late Steve Irwin or Austin Stevens?

Hammond clearly loves his job and is passionate about cars just as irwin was passionate about crocodiles and stevens is passionate about snakes. I tend to agree with the comment that they know the risks before they take part but I dont think they will be thinking that this could be fatal?

For the record Top Gear is a top programme and one of my favourites. Hammond's condition is 'stable' which is great, I hope he makes a speedy recovery.

Re: top gear bloke seriously hurt in car crash

Some disgraceful comments on this thread.

The same arguments about motorsports could have applied to horse-racing, hot-air balloon flying and fecking jousting in the past.

The world has always had dangerous sports, all Top Gear do is provide car reviews to a massive worldwide audience.

If we don't want fast cars to be reviewed there are a huge amount of websites and magazines (and three other car TV programmes) to be banned in the UK alone.

I'm aware that Scotland recently allowed your politicians to play mumsie by bringing in a smoking ban, but this anti-Top Gear sentiment is the worst type of nannying bullshit I've read on the Bounce.

fwiw I dont think theres anything wrong with taking risks infact I consider it to be a fundamental part of every day life and I welcome the opportunity to indulge in some medium risk sports such as diving, surfing, climbing and canoeing.....I undertake these fully in the knowledge that I may die as a result and try to manage my risk as effectively as possible to ensure that doesnt come about - the same can be said of Hammond in this case and off-course of steve irwin.

Personally I dont get the car thing - it introduces a large degree of risk to others and not just the individual who likes driving fast and the high equipment dependency takes the control of risk away from the individual to a degree. Its also pretty environmentally irresponsible imo but I have no great desire to see anything banned because i hold these views.

I do like Richard Hammond and I do hope he recovers fully - doesnt change the fact that there is inherant risk in driving a rocket propelled vehicle at 300mph - a risk he would have been well aware of and accepted.

Agreed - the idea of people taking responsibility for their own actions seems to be well out of fashion these days, we prefer to blame (or try to control) schools/ the tele/ personal choice/ polis or anything else for society's problems.

I am not looking for a fight on this but the reference to my opinion as "twatish" and "disgraceful" seems to me totally unwarranted. Nowhere did I suggest that hammond should not do what he did, all I said was if he does it then his fans and family need to understand he may come a cropper. So no idea where your "nannying" nonsense comes from? And as for the worst you've read on the Bounce? Get a grip.

I also think that while amusing Top Gear sends out dangerous messages about road safety that the idiotic sooped up Astra brigade may use as encouragement - you may not agree, fine but hardly twatish and disgraceful.

I see the link with Steve Irwin but I think the crucial difference is that fannying about in supercars (which last time I looked is not a recognised motor sport) is slightly less important than trying to save the environment. I understand why you would engage in the latter but not the former. Again, maybe you differ from me but hardly twatish.
