Interesting one this. It will obviously be divisive but if the weeg can have places named after nelson mandela and statues of la passionara, then why not?

I'm sure there are streets/ paths named after all sorts of people in Embra, including tons who would not be 'acceptable' to Scottish nationalists or 'Irish' republicans.

I don't see what the fuss is about, bearing in mind the above... why should anyone care?

Something we still can't learn to do in NI is 'let the other side have one for free', maybe they'll fare better in Embra. Although maybe the fact that this re-naming shenanigans is being championed by the James Connolly Society doesn't help its cause (I know that if I was a councillor I wouldn't take kindly to being told what to do by them).

Only racist bigots or ignoramouses who can't make a distinction between 1916's Citizen's army and current drug dealing provos will be offended by this.

Can't wait for the movie

typical that it's a tory who's objecting eh?

If we can have a street in Edinburgh commemorating the perpetuation of monarchy in Europe (Waterloo place)

A street named after the german royal family imposed on us by the english who commited genocide here (Hanover street)

A street named after the man who ordered the glencoe massacre (William street)

and a monument named after possibly the third biggest liar in history (after copernicus and goebells), sir Walter Scott.

Whats up with a path named after a great civil rights activist?

Well said that man. The reason the Tories are objecting is not because he's a republican - as you say, Connolly's politics bore no relation to those of today's SF - but because he was a socialist.

A statue in the cowgate would be a good move too, with the added advatage it may just attract a few more tourists too.

The only vaguely plausible reason (historically) for not doing this would be the Banna Strand german rifles/munitions incident but that was mostly Pearce's doing, and who can blame them for trying to get foreign help to oust the occupier, and not for the first time either.

Their objection probably isn't his republicanism or his socialism but his taking of arms against the Brits. But then as egb says so did Mandela, so it doesn't wash.

Me personally, I'd rename feckin Princes St after him.

And the proposal angered Tory MSP David McLetchie who said:

"He [James Connolly] was obviously a hugely divisive figure and something like this would be totally inappropriate."

What a feckin twat. Taxi McLetchie?

IIRC from reading Desmond Greaves Life and Times of James Connolly which my brother chored from George IV Bridge library, Connolly also took up arms for the Brits as he was in the British Army for a period.

As for Mcletchie hes the type of Jambo hun without the bus fare Tory stereotype you think only exists in the pages of an Irvine Welsh novel but scarily enough exist in real life !

As for commemorating him by naming a path in the Meadows anyone know what the geographical significance is of that location ? IIRC he was born in King Stables Rd and then lived in the Cowgate where his plaque is.

He also had a shoemaker's shop in Buccleuch St, dunno if that is the tie-in though.
