Indoctrination in schools

A few months ago I attended an event held in the school hall of james gillespies high school. as far as i can recall it's the first time i've been on the premises of a school since i left school myself. what i saw was a little bit disquieting.

I have to confess to being a little taken aback at my surroundings. The hall had four sides - two walls, a wall of windows and a stage.

Of the two walls proper, one had a massive (and rather impressive) mural running the length of the hall dedicated to 'diversity'. The other featured a huge banner celebrating our 'diverse city' (you see what they did there

Elsewhere there were numerous posters, slogans and other bobbins banging on about diversity.

Now, I have to say, I'm quite in favour of teaching the boons of diversity. However I'm aware others blanche from any kind of promotion of a subjective value set within our education system.

But what did spook me was the almost bludgeoning effect of this barrage and the seemingly monomaniacal nature of it. I did feel that a line between teaching and indoctrinating was being courted.

Does anybody else think this is a cause for concern on either count?

After all - though i continue to be a supporter of multi-culturalism, it is being challenged by even the most 'right minded' of folk. So it's not even something that could be considered an undisputed shared value within our society, or even amongst the elites that shepherd it.

should schools be going so ott in the service of such a highly partial viewpoint?

glad to see they have moved on from the white power theme when i was there - it never got to me though

Anyway Ill support diversity up to a point, but Im not going to support every thing that every do-gooder, perv, weirdo, enlightened being etc etc wants to have me believe. I always thought that was individualism, so Ill rejoice in my individualism but not necessarily in others diversity

Very good question. IMO not to such an excessive degree; although parents and others may agree that the promotion is a positive one, the overall effect you describe is definitely OTT and reminiscent of the blatant propaganda of the old communist regimes.

School should be challenged on their presentation.

A couple of murals and a few posters urging bairns to be tolerant
of one anothers cultures seems fine to me. Bruntsfield primary has
pretty much the same things on their walls and it hasn't affected my
7 year old adversely as far as i can tell. He'll be going to Gillespies
when he's the correct age for High School (as i did) and i would have
no problem sending him there if the same type of thing was on the
walls then.

Do you think it would be better to teach people how to condiser the varuious issues involved rather than shove this fascile vision of bliss down there throats.

Feels like 1984 "Children double plus happy with multi-culturalism!! Hate our at 10:00 will feature screening of Kilroy!!"

Or Modern Studies as it was sometimes called.

It wasn't the message brian it was the "YOU VILL BELIEVE!!!" manner it which it was been pushed that disturbed me.

mind you other people don't think any ideology should be pushed in schools, so they might think this kind of thing even worse than catholic schools. at the least the latter say what they do on the tin, as it were.
