I found this a thought provoking article. Admittedly it is in the Telegraph, so the quotes have surely been cherrypicked, but still.

Is it just a case of Trev moving to the right (Ken Livingstone suggested on BBC London that "soon he'll be joining the BNP")? Or maybe it's just him getting dewy-eyed and nostalgic over a now-mythologised version of afro-carribbean immigration. Perhaps he just dislikes muslims.

Or maybe he's right, and multiculturalism is stitching us all up

Its not clear from the article who he is talking about. If he means eastern europeans/poles when he talks of current patterns of immigration then from what i see day to day he is well off the mark. They seem to have integrated with ease into everyday culture and friendship groups, perhaps primarily due to the fact that they enjoy a bevvy, an advantage they hold over other ethnic groups when it comes to integration.

I agree, although I suspect he's talking more about muslim immigrants, who often don't have those advantages (and are usually a different colour as well, which often doesn't help).

I found it interesting that Livingstone described him - somewhat contemptuously - as having had "a black power phase".

theres not much of a point to this is there? hes saying that as society changes by process of inward and outward migration (amongst other factors) we will have to adapt to those changes, there will be positives and there will be negatives - well doh - it may be interesting to see his speech but I mistrust thew telegraphs interpretation in the first para since it doesnt provide direct quotes.

disappointing to see the unprecedented threat to glabal security line being trotted out though, surely there were times in the past when the security of the world was more threatend? cuban missle crisis anyone? world fuckin war anyone?

I think trev is not all wrong. there's a massive difference between mult-racialism and multi-culturalism. personally i still favour the latter but i seem to be part of a shrinking band.

i think the problem was the usual dogmatic approach applied for so long by some of the loudest trumpeters of multi-culturalism - the stupid relativism, the even more stupid hatred of self etc. It's in the nature of such types to backlash the other way, the moment the dream becomes tarnished by reality.

myself, i hope the baby doesn't exit stage left with the bath water. what is needed is a mature form of multi-culturalism that gives proper place to a minimal set of civic obligations, and encourages a second communal identity.

however this is quite hard work, so i'm expecting the ranters of left and right to demand ever more 'assimilation' as we move forward.

And I don't preclude the possibility they're incorrect either. multi-culturalism (as opposed to multi-racialism) is pretty much untested water outside the US, which has strong common bonds. it may not work - the authoritarians may be right on this one. hope not though.

My wife and the baby got thrown off the bus on the way home from work the other day as he as decreed that wheelchair users have priority on the pram spaces - took her another 30 minutes to get another bus.

Equality? No chance.
