Tommy Sheridan was on newsnight last night, gleaming golden under the hot lights of the studio he gave a brief outline of his plans to start the solidarity Party and waxing lyrical about how he was taking about 40% of the SSP with him. when asked whether
a) scotland could stand yet another socialist party and
b) whether he felt it was right to fracture something he professed to love dearly - SSP- his answer was to waffle on about how he was doing this for the good of the country and how he was the only man to lead scotland into a bright new political future.

He had no policies to speak of apart from saying he wanted to end illegal wars/make povert history/etc etc etc nothing much new there then from the new saviour.

Even when asked whether this new party was simply an extension of his own outsized ego he refused to acknowledge that he was anything other than the new scottish hero (my words not his but that was the gist of it).

Anyone else see it and if so what are your opinions.

I would really love to know how an Independent Socialist Scotland is going to end all these illegal wars?

We do fund a lot of wars though. I wonder if Sheridan is against the funding of wars in Africa?

An egotistical fanny who by setting up a new party is liable to mean there is virtually no socialist representation in the Scottish parliament as the left wing vote is split. Ironic since the SSP was set up, with Sheridan as one of the prime movers, to combine all the smaller left wing groups.

Personally speaking I'll still vote for the SSP as it was policies I was voting for and never Tommy Sheridan.

I think Sheridan's new vehicle will supplant the SSP. The SSP was basically a Tommy vehicle. It has gone downhill ever since it stopped being a one-man band (ie after the 2003 election). Tommy won't do as well as the SSP did in 2003, but he will do a lot better than the rump SSP.

Spot on, he is (intentionally or not) splitting the socialist vote. There still exists teh chance to cooperate by means of an electoral pact - but there seems to be bad blood. Why? I have missed all the furore over this... are there policy differences or just personalities?

I'd say he is doing it intentionally, certainly intentional to take votes away from the SSP and I don't think it is about policies with him now. . Just wants to get back at the party.
