Reading the posts below the article is really quite depressing. Makes you realise that much of the resistance to the idea of independence is driven by ignorance and cowardice.

Well, that rather depends on your position.

True, but I was really referring to the poster "Nev" who sees support for the SNP as nothing else but anti-English racism. Others seem to be suggesting that "maybe it's time for a change", as if the SNP were another alternative to the Lib Dems.

OK, but the SNP have said one of the campaign planks for the next election will be to stop the closures of A and E departments in Lanarkshire. Given that focus on detailed policy isues, isn't the 'time for a change poster' more credible given the messages coming from the SNP?

Yes I agree with that, to an extent anyway. I always opposed such tactics, and advocated a dual policy of 1) campaigning solely on independence- there is a battle to be won here on the central issue so why diffuse and obscure the message? and 2) disband the SNP upon achieving independence.

Re: Would you vote SNP..................

I've got no doubt that the voters will be looking to give a severe and well deserved kick in the teeth to this shambolic Jack McConnell administration.

The logical party to vote to protest is the SNP but when minds are focussed on just what the SNP stand for - i.e that issue that they never these days really champion - Independence then perhaps the actual poll results from actual votes will differ from these opinion polls as i am far from convinced that there is any appetite for Independence.

If there was an appetite for Independence then maybe Salmond might start to campaign on the subject..

Actually I've got some sympathy with the SNP here. If you campaign for independence alone then you will get the question 'what will an independent Scotland look like'? If you don't say then that will reinforce doubts in the electorates mind. On the other hand setting out policies leads to claims of bandwagon jumping and opportunism. I also have no doubt that someone in the labour party will be counting up all the SNP commitments...

One thing I do agree with you DC - there should be a commitment to wind up when (if) the goal is achieved. I'm very unconfortable with something that would style itself as Scotland's Party in an independent Scotland.

That's why a concrete picture of an independent Scotland must be presented; an accurate one with the good bad and ugly all on display. Why hasn't the SNP leadership seriously tried to do this? If they have, I am unaware of it.

So why is this the case?
