BBs or Scouts?

I was a proud member of the 8th Leith BB. Our fitbaw team was always in the top 5 in the league, despite my many appearances as an inept central defender.

Scouts were rumoured to be recruited from the ranks of softies, heathens and boys with older sisters.

Boys Brigade.

We were better than the Scouts at football, fighting - practically anything you can think of.

Remember the ambushes on the Scout Hall very well!

You stole the words out of my mouth - the scouts in NI when I were a lad had a reputation of being like the BB, except they couldn't fight or march.

Of course, I was in the Scouts We had the normal proddie Scouts and the Catholic Boy Scouts of Ireland.

(Probably had the Popular People's Boy Scouts of Ireland and the People's Popular Boy Scouts of Ireland somewhere too).

Re: BBs or Scouts?

12th Barclay Bruntsfield BBs'. The only reason i went there and not cubs/scouts was the 12th had a good football team and a bigger hall where we could play football indoors when it was crap weather outside.

Cubs then Scouts!

They were closer to the hoose! Don't know where the nearest BBs were.

Oh and we had a green jersey

Cubs and scouts for me. I was barred from joining the BBs as my parents thought they were linked to Orangism.

Re: BBs or Scouts?

I was in neither, but my little brother was in the BB's for a while until the facist across the road made snide remarks about how the boy's brigade wasn't something for Catholics . He hates us. But he's a gunt, and we've already had the last laugh.

Re: BBs or Scouts?

BTW, the way this vote's been going (ie, only one Scouts vote in the early stages with the BB well ahead, Scouts then catching up) shows that Bounce BBers get up earlier than Bounce Scouters.

Must be the auld proddie work ethic (or maybe the ex-Scouters get their house staff to do the early morning chores)

Re: BBs or Scouts?

Only lasted a couple of weeks at scouts before packing it in to concentrate on football but went to Cubs for ages. The other Catholics and I later renouncing the oath of loyalty, though we were still reminded of taking it for years after in a jokey way in the stirrup and tower pubs.
Was cool when our 'akela' absolved us of the obligation to go to church of Scotland, simply delaring ' it's awrite boys, you don't have to'

only really went for the football

was Boys(of the old ) Brigade much different?

Scary. In my experience it was all working class laddies that attended the BB's.The Scouts I knew all tended to come from the more middle class backgrounds.

Who had the pillbox-style hat and who had the later 'chip-bag' design? pillbox for me. The hat contained a pocket inside with aa document with your tasks to earn the various badges. A natty dark blue jumper with a collar and sock tie-ups.

Oh ma lanyards!

I must admit that the football and PE was a big draw for me too. Then there were the firearms. Here's one of me preparing to go and sort the Scouts out.

Chip poke for me. My uncle was in the 65th as well when he was a boy. They got to drill with real guns!!!

We did have some VERY old Indian clubs which I got a shot off.

Only football team I could ever get into as well. I quit because some of the toerags we played against took the whole thing far too seriously. Crippling tackles, threats after the game if they lost - load of shite.
