If you havent got it buy it - the 4th dvd with all the extras is superb!!!

Started bout 10pm, after missus went to bed.

Some Godfather trivia I copied from t'interweb all:

There was a double used for the long-shot on Brando's death scene.


"The Godfather" was nominated for 10 Academy Awards. It one 3, for Best Picture, Actor (see below), Screenplay. It didn't win for Costume Design, Director, Film Editing, Music, Dramatic Score, Sound, Supporting Actor.


Marlon Brando refused to accept his award because he claimed that the US and Hollywood were discriminating Indian peoples. He instead sent Sacheen Littlefeather to accept the award, instead of him. She was later proved a fraud and her real name is Maria Cruz. Those crazy dramatic types!


Coppola was given the award for best directing from The Director's Guild of America.


Anthony was used for Michael's son's name because the child actor, Anthony Gounaris, responded better to his real name.


Anthony is the boy with Vito at the end of the movie.


The simple instructions given to 350 extras during the wedding were to "really have a party".


Golden Globe winners for the film are: Best Picture-Drama, Director (motion picture)- Coppola, Actor (motion picture, drama) -Brando, Original Score- Nino Rota, Screenplay - Coppola, Puzo. Al Pacino and James Caan were nominated for a Golden Globe as well.


Due to the film's controversy, protests were lodged by the Italien-American Civil Rights League.


Actual bomb threats were received.

Coppola also got his parents involved as patrons in the restaurant were Sollozzo is killed by Michael. His mother also ended up on the cutting room floor in an office scene, and his father was the piano player in the "mattresses" scene.


Robert Towne was an uncredited script helper who worked on the garden scene with the Don and Michael.


Robert Duvall and James Caan on one occasion mooned Brando and Coppola. While Brando didn't find it very funny, he joined them in mooning the reception at the wedding.


Robert Duvall won for best supporting actor by the New York Film Critics Circle.


Al Pacino won best actor from the National Society of Film Critics.


The tomatoe garden scene with Don Corleone was ad-libbed.


Oranges seem to signify in all 3 Godfather movies that death or a close encounter is about to come. The Don is shot while purchasing oranges, and he is killed while one is in his mouth.


The word "mafia" was strictly avoided by Puzo and Coppola while writing the script.


When Sonny (Caan) beats up Carlo (Russo), he actually broke some of Russo's ribs.


The blood for the horse head was fake. BUT THE HEAD WAS REAL!!!!


To achieve that lovely accent, Brando stuffed in his mouth cotton balls (for rehearsal) and a specially made mouthpiece from his dentist (actual filming). Brando's mouthpiece is on display for everyone to see at a Universal Studios prop and costume museum.


Pacino too had a cool dentist, who made him gadget to offset his jaw, so it looked broken from when Michael was hit by the chief of police.


Frank Sinatra was considered for the role of Johnny, but the role went to Pacino because Sinatra and Johnny were all too similar.


Lawrence Olivier was considered for the role of Vito!


Burt Reynolds was cast as Michael originally, but Brando refused to work with him.


Robert De Niro read parts for Sonny and Michael, but Coppola already had a Michael, and decided he wasn't right for Sonny either. Poor guy.


Warren Beaty, Jack Nicholson, Dustin Hoffman, Robert Redford, and John Marley were all considered for the part of Michael, but all refused.


In 1977, a special splicing of the first two Godfather films was aired on TV. It featured some new scenes.


Grossed only $229,932 in its opening week.


Runs one minute longer in Sweden.


It did however gross 86.691million dollars on rentals.


From reissues, it grossed a total of 134.821 million dollars.


If you were living in a cave, it was based on Mario Puzo's best selling book.

Disagree that The Godfather is boring, it's a cinematic masterpiece, beautifully filmed and very atmospheric, but I also think that Goodfellas is an even better film for reasons too numerous and anorak-like to go into here. Without Goodfellas there would likely have been no Sopranos and that would be unthinkable!

Maybe one of the reason people might think Goodfellas is better is because of it's pace.One film about 2 1/2 hours long, always on the move...I like the way hand held

s follw the actors around...the scene were Liotta and his wife/girlfriend enter the nightclub through the kitchen is great...one shot about 4 minutes long.The Joe Pesci character is magic too, probably my favourite of all time.

The whole Godfather thing is 9 hours long and therefore moves slower than Goodfellas.It's the ultimate movie in my eyes though-esp. pt II.

Incidentally, the word 'fuck' is said 300 times in Goodfellas, quite some going.

Oh aye, Sopranos series 6 starts on E4 next Thursday at 10pm...cannae wait.
