'Political Journeys'

Why do these only ever seem to go from left to right?

The only well known right to left one I can think of - and it's not really a good example cos it involves a fruitloop - is Mosely going from tories to labour before ending up with the ghastly synthesis of left and right that is national socialism.

can anybody think of any other, or explain why the traffic seems largely to head in one direction

Isn't it just a case of youthful idealism being tempered by a growing awareness of the grim realities?

if that is so does it infer that left wing positions are fundamentally naieve?

or do people become cynical as opposed to more realistic

possibly. or more realistic? cynical? responsible? experienced? afraid of change? more learned?

all are possible explanations.

but why do so few go the other way? unless in your view we are fundamentally selfish, there should be some traffic going the other way, surely?

Re: 'Political Journeys'

Now, i cant really say much about my own political journey, as i'm still young.

However over the last few, I'm sure most of us have recognised Blair and his New Labour friend's shift to the right. Some of the changes in certain Ministers has been startling (Reid, Straw, Blunkett - all former lefties turned in the complete opposite direction). In this situation, is it more the case that power corrupts, rather than their personal politics evolving?

From my experience (by that i mean by talking to my dad and uncles concerning their involvement in the Labour party) it seems to be that most people become alot more cynical with age, but this does not nescessarily mean that their beliefs shift to the right.

power certainly has the potential to corrupt but i don;t think that;s the same thing - consider lenin and trotsky for instance.

actually that dynamic duo destroy the notion of cyniscism being synonmous with rightward shift as well.

sorry to go off at a tangent, but there has ever been a more undeserving respository of unfulfilled dreams than leon trotsky, it can only be vladimir romanov

Not true.

They all shifted to the right long before they came in to power.

Why?

To win power and also IMO a realisation of what is practical and feasible.

Re: 'Political Journeys'

True to a certain extent. The Portillo Right Winger booted out in 1997 is not the same politican who stood for the leadership election in 2001.

I don't actually think there is one policy him and Blair would disagree on..

Both centre right politicans.
