I've only met your dad once but reckon he might enjoy a luxury hotel break in Belfast (loads of decent new hotels, good food, good pubs etc)?? If not a Dublin or Cork hotel break - maybe Donegal for something quieter.

Funnily enough that was my first thought too. Inverness is another of my favourites.

Think his dad has spent alot of time in Belfast, he's got some great stories about interviews with various shady well-kent faces.

Have they been to York mate? Easy to get to, nice enough town and enough hostelries to satisfy their requirements.Lake district can be good too...a nice hotel in somewhere like Ambleside might go down nicely.Or a few days in Jersey would suit your ma down to the ground I'd reckon.

That's what I was thinking - although he could skip visiting some of the 'drinking clubs' of Belfast to interview the local loons this time round!

Re: UK Weekend Breaks

I spent a great few days in Oxford a few years back. recommend the Bath Place Hotel (whatever you do do not go to the Royal Oxford Hotel).

Cotswolds are nice for a rural time.

What kind of thing do they like?

got friends in dublin and cork that we go to visit, would recommend both highly. lot of work has been carried out in cork over the last few years to make it european city of culture and imo it is great for a weekend away

Re: UK Weekend Breaks

London and Bath have been mentioned, Bath in particular is a lovely city and one of the best places I've lived in.

York is also a good shout lots of historical, touristy type things to see and do, plus the York Brewery trip is a good way of starting a peeve up with some very good real ales, especially Centurians Ghost

Been a long time since I was in Dublin but I've heard that it is become rather expensive and over-run with drunken arseholes. Cork, on the other hand, is excellent.

Second York. Its a lovely town and you can get day trips out to North Yorkshire from their.

Bit of a long trip from Scotland but Brussels is good for a weekend (when the rooms can be very good value). Lovely people and some of the best food you will eat (not to mention their beer).

dublin has became very expensive, the stag / hen weekend is very popular so on hindsight it may not be ideal for an older couple.

another great thing about cork is that just an hours drive outside side the city you really are in the real ireland, beautiful and rugged. not the real ireland known to many as the temple bar, dublin
