Lanark Wallace festival

Lanark pulls out all the stops this weekend with it's annual William Walace festival.

Wallace began his campaign for Scottish freedom in Lanark when he slaied the English sherrif.

Weekend of activities including battle re-enactments in Castlebank Park.

Obviously most of us will be watching the green jerseys on the Satuarday but certainly a good day out in store for the Sunday.

Wallace has had a great press since the film Braveheart, and rightly so. He is a great icon and was a fantastic leader for Scotland. Having said that it was under Bruce's leadership that our independence was made safe and his place in history cannot be overlooked.

Both giants of history, both worthy of the mantle Scottish legends. You would not say the same who sold Scotland out in 1707, another anniversary that will be "commemorated" next year.

Maybe Scots could show their pride in their contribution to establishing the greatest empire the world has even known.

Some of us would rather talk Scotland up and out of this union. Frankly, the empire does not fill me with anything like pride.

Re: Lanark Wallace festival

Both men are worthy of celebration and commemoration, Wallace for his belligerence and cunning, Bruce for his leadership and soldierly skills.
I take no pride in our role in the empire, slaughtering aboriginal peoples all over the world, stealing their money and resources and ending their civilisations is nothing to be proud of.
As for the 'union' [Only Registered Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register] I have a simple gripe with it. We were bumped. Our dynasty, whatever it's failings, inherits the joint crowns, but within eighty five years the English have replaced them with their own choice, then insulted us even further by giving that German clown the throne in 1714.

Jacobus Rex!

Disgraceful, the way that our forebears great achievements are denied.

Disgraceful. If you could amount to a fraction of the worth of these pioneers, you would be doing well. A have meet many people from the former empire who speak nothing but praise for the Scots and their influence.
Your sneering cynicism does you and your country no credit.

I pity your ignorance of your countrymen's achievements - particularly bizarre seeing as you live in what was the second city of the empire.

How did Scotland get to build the empire and profit from it? Its disgraceful the way people talk down the Countr's achievements as part of Britain.
