The "no hand luggage" dilemna

I'm flying out of Heathrow two weeks today and I'm pondering the issue of valuables and luggage Lets face it, for an errant baggage handler this is christmas come early. And lo behold anyone who dares lock electrical equipment in a locked suitcase. Not a particular dig at baggage handlers, but there are crooks in every industry and I've experienced theft from checked in luggage in the past.

Oh, and almost every travel insurance (also known as toilet paper) underwriters exclude liability for any loss when luggage has been checked in.

Anyone got any solutions to this one to prevent the high risk of losing your

One solution I've thought of is to send it to a contact I have where I'm going using the Royal Mail Airsure system - won't be cheap I'd imagine but if I remove the battery it will weigh less. Chances are they'll change the rules as soon as I send it though :brickwall

The problem with this Jamesie is that the rules will probably change on a regular basis from Monday until some semblance on normality comes back to the fore. I fully expect that liquids are going to be a big no no from now on though.

As an after thought if you secure your case at check in you may well be covered for theft, especially if you report it on discovery, by your household contents insurance. Not a great help at the time however it should give you some semblance of security when you are travelling.

There's been far too much crap allowed in as hand baggage for too long so I hope they don't revert back to the previous lack of control at least until they introduce explosives detectors in the security check.

I know what you mean about baggae though - its brutal.

My other half has been in the habit of taking a wee vanity case with some overnight stuff on board since the airlines would regularly send her suitcase to the wrong airport (or not at all).

I only take a book on board, but people won't need to take half the stuff onto a plane if they had any faith that their suitcase would turn up at the other end.

You could buy that in the airport.

There'd need to be a huge cosmetics shop and I'd need to sell a kidney to replace the contents of my wife's vanity case!

Re: The "no hand luggage" dilemna

Listened to a report on the radio today that interviewed a couple of American's arriving at Edinburgh through Heathrow. When asked about what they were allowed to take aboard they responded with:
Husband:"Well, we were being told that we couldn't take books, or magazines, and when we heard that we thought the worst."
Wife: "Yeah, we thought we'd have to talk to each other instead"

Re: The "no hand luggage" dilemna

Scoobie and I flew over from Edinburgh to here in Norn Irn yesterday afternoon.
We had the basic stuff in a clear carrier bag and I can tell you that I have never sailed through security so quickly in my entire life.

Despite guirning about it before hand...there is something to be said for taking the bare minimum through as hand luggage. Safe and quick and we did think twice about the amount of sh!te we packed in our bag.
I will also add that getting on and off the plane was speeded up because nobody was using the overhead lockers.

I wrapped all our valuables in our clothes and everything arrived safe and sound.

We fly back to Scotland tomorrow (Monday) so will report back to let you know how the return journey goes.

Re: The "no hand luggage" dilemna

I think it's a great idea, and I hope we keep it. Some of the stuff that folk were taking on is just ridiculous - i've checked smaller suitcases into the hold!

As long as the airport shops in the departure lounge become regulated so as not to rip you off, then you can get a book/magazine for the flight (depending on duration) and something to drink there.

If the rules stay as they've now been changed to today Jamsie, you'll be fine taking your valuables on board ....

Agree that minimising what people can take as hand luggage is a good idea, but I did like just taking a small overnight bag on so I could get off and away at the other end quicker when I was regularly commuting up and down ...

Small price to pay for safer flying though ....

I flew recently as well (from England) but security took ages for me. There were long queues and everybody was bodyseached, shoes had to be taken off and checked etc. It probably differs depending on the airport.

Getting on and off the plane was very quick though.

Getting off the plane quicker because people aren't using the lockers sounds good. When I fly over to Embra I hate waiting ages for the plane to unload as I'm always chomping at the bit to get to down Sunny Leith for a Hibby jar!

My wife doesn't - but she seems to have been very unlucky in that on many occasions when she reaches her destination her suitcase which was checked into the hold does not. Therefore she feels the need to take some stuff on board to keep in reserve in case her main bag doesn't arrive when she does.

I'm all in favour of people bringing less hand luggage onto a plane as it was getting rediculous - a book or a magazine is about all you really need to take onto a plane.

But for this to happen successfully attempts should me made to reduce includents of hold baggage being lost/ delayed. It would also be helpful if the turnaround time to collect a bag at your destination could be improved.

Still will be on the cards, mate, this occasion was for a christening and my eldest Uncle died while we were over, so there was no chance of doing our own thing.

We're coming back for New Year, could sort something out then?

Yup we were body searched and had shoes x-rayed too.

Security at Belfast today took a wee bit longer than it did at Edinburgh on Saturday but it wasn't too bad.
However, a big beefy Canadian and his two spotty dorky sons (both wearing Celtic shirts

The gripe at Edinburgh today was the time to get the baggage back.
We were told that our plane had an 8 minute turnaround to get us off and get the next batch of passengers on...thus you would expect luggage to be off and on the baggage band in superquick time...ehm, no. I estimate that from landing to getting bags back took at least 50 minutes.
