Is the licence fee worth the money?

Tin hat oan......believe it or not, I reckon it is.

Aside from the p1sspoor Radio Ulster and it's spineless, dumbed-down grovelling news values, I use BBC services all day long:

BBC Online (crap local news. Also sport, weather and more)
BBC Radio Ulster (crap local news)
BBC Radio Five (class late night shows)
BBC Radio Four (relaxing very late night shows)
BBC Radio One (DAB and online for backround music as well as the online archive of shows filed by music type).

She Who Must Be Obeyed watchs BBC tele most nights for EastEnders.

Bearing in mind that Radio Five, Radio Four and the BBC website are arguably the best of their type in the world...I reckon that's worth the cash

Re: Is the licence fee worth the money?

Listen to radio 4 and London quite a bit. Other than that BBC 4 is pretty good. I reckon its better value than the 40 odd channels of shite I pay a similar amount for off Telewest.

The BBC website and WAP sites are the best available for news and weather.

Should this not be a poll, BTW?

Aye, 6 Music is pretty decent as well. I actually reckon their digital tv channels are reasonable as well. Everyone I know who has kids finds cBeebies a bit of a godsend at times, News24 is pretty reasonable and BBC4 fills a niche which you don't get on their terrestrial channels. BBC1 & BBC2 are both pretty shite though imo, and that's where the bulk of the license fee goes.

I'm in the habit of listening to music on the Beeb by type rather than station, but I'll give it a go.

Good scheme - and I'll add an option to take account of Wee162's point about BBC 1 and BBC 2.

Increasingly stuff from BBC 3 and 4 are making it on to BBC 1 and 2. They seem to use it as a testing ground - which is what BBC2 used to do.

I say make the BBC a subscription service, those who want it can buy it and I can stop paying the (very high) wages of a tool like Terry Wogan.

There's a public service element to it as well though. There's a lot of programmes which are made or commisioned by the BBC which would simply not be made by private companies. I can and will slag BBC1 and BBC2 but they are still absolutely miles better than ITV. Same with radio stations where the amount of decent commercial stations can be counted on the fingers of a blind butcher.

Re: Is the licence fee worth the money?

I'd be happy making the BBC semi-commercial and reducing the licence fee. I wouldn't mind if they put limited, unobtrusive advertising on BBC 1 & 2 ie. ads once an hour at the same volume as the other programmes, sponsorship of shows etc. I'm against any form of advertising on the radio though, I pretty much refuse to listen to commercial radio.

State funding for the arts including the BBC is a good example of the working classes funding the pastimes of the middle classes.

You've summed up the reason I'm so keen on the Beeb - if it wasn't for Radio Ulster, 1/4 and 5 I'd have to listen to a thing called 'Cool FM' in NI: I reckon about a day's worth of it would rot the brain.

Re: Is the licence fee worth the money?

Absolutely a Yes! Radio Scotland for Sports coverage, Five Live 24 hours, Radio 2 and Newsnight (But not the pathetic Newsnight 'Scotland'..) all make the licence fee value for money..

That said in an age of multi media it surely can't be right that we are all forced to pay the Licence fee for a minority of the programmes available that may be of no interest..

The only things I really watch on the BBC are Top Gear, Still Game & Match Of The Day (Sometimes). Radio 2/ Five Live & Radio Scotland are about all I listen to from the Beeb radio wise. Can't for suresay it's worth the money. Other the other hand, I couldnae be bothered with ads every five minutes like they have on the likes of Bravo or something....or nothing...oh yeah Little Britain is ok as well.

Re: Is the licence fee worth the money?

For me it's real vfm- the only non- BBC TV I watch is the sports channels and some channel 4. I accept that the licence can be tough for low income earners, but the BBC is worth preserving. Once it's gone it's gone - and who would just love that?

I'm all for the BBC and paying ther licence fee. The real issue for me is the news provided by the BBC.

Commercial stations are funded by private compan
