Yes. I think they are offended because of the use of the star of david (rather than the Israeli flag) and the implication that Hezbollah is a mere irritant as opposed to a serious threat.

Yes it does. But it's also the symbol of worldwide Judaism, and as such members of the disapora might be rather offended to be lumped in with Israel's actions.

Then you're not looking very hard. 17 jewish people were arrested in San Francisco at just such a demonstration. The desire to lump all jews together as zionists - and as oppressors judging by this cartoon - smacks of something very close to anti-semitism.

Turn it around and imagine a cartoon with a muslim crescent symbol after an islamist suicide bombing. I suspect this wouldn't be quite so acceptable.

smacks of something very close to anti-semitism-I wouldn't disagree, but this image (of jews an anything other than zionists ) isn't portrayed in the mass media.

british muslim societies have been very prominent and expressed a whole range of opinions on iraq/afganistan/war on terror - although I conceed it may only be that they've been given the platform.

I know nothing of the San Francisco demonstration but it certainly hasn't hit the headlines the same way the 'not in my name' protests in this country did

surely the death toll show the one sidedness of the current situation? and is thus represented by the black gloved fist taking the free punches - the same wouldn't be relevent of an islamist suicide bombing at it is one strike.

If it was perpetrated by a state, such as Pakistan, which used that symbol on its flag - presumably as a declaration of its philosophy, then why not?


I can see why many Jews have a problem with it but they have to remeber that the Bully Boy, jack boot state of Israel was created in the name of Judaism. I wouyld say it has more to do with right wing exteremism than faith, though.

Like I say, their directing their ire in the wrong direction (accepting you point that many Jews are not pro-Israeli).

Which in itself is an anti-semitic stance, given the way the media bends over backwards to assure people how moderate muslims are - and rightly in my opinion. This is not a courtesy shown to jews.

Well, it wouldn't, would it. The problem though is not in trying to except Jews who don't support Israel from this wide brush, it's in the concept of Judaism as the prime motor behind a brutal action. That's anti-semitic.

I'm not talking about just substituting the stars and using the same cartoon. Obviously that wouldn't work. I'm saying that using an islamic symbol in such a manner would be extremely controversial.

Because it's a symbol of a religion and a people as a whole! Such a cartoon would be interpreted as suggesting that the entire islamic polity was behind whatever the action was.

"Anti-Semitic" is a funny term, I was under the impression that all the peoples of that area are considered Semitic, not just Jews.
