Open Office is an open source, free alternative to Microsoft Orifice (which costs over £300 I think). They have recently done a series of adverts on the buses that go to the Microsoft campus.
The slogans include "Stop giving a bully your lunch money", "Compatible with expensive, closed, memory loving software", and "Prehistoric reptilians welcome." I was just "upgraded" to office suite 2003. Thank God it was an "upgrade" I would have hated to see what would have happened if it was otherwise.

Open Office is great IMO, I am not a huge user of the office software but its served me fine when ive needed to use it.
Nice thread i was going to start one asking about free software as i want to try and make my pc as legal/free as possible, not because im scared but because i am tight and there seems to be open source/free solutions to fit all our home user needs just now. An alternative to photoshop is supposed to be Gimp i aint tried that yet though. |

Been using it for about two years now.
Running on WinXP unfortunately as I've been too busy on other things to install a Linux OS. The 'Calc' program (like Excel) is pretty good but perhaps not quite as pretty or fool-friendly (yikes) as Excel, but it does all I need it too and a lot more I haven't discovered yet. The 'Writer' (like Word) is excellent, not that much different from Word and easy to use. Must admit am not one for PowerPoint stuff, but the 'Impress' (ironic title there or what?) prog opens all crap PP files sent to me by desperate mailing buddies. So I'd give it 8 out of 10. 10 out of 10 on price/usefullness scale!! Not bad for nowt.

Pretty much agree with Harlem, for home users it is excellent. I'm not so sure about corporate use as some office products are so widely used it may cause compatability issues, particularly with Powerpoint or Project.

I use something called Word at work: it is a joke of a programme, I work at speed with a very large volume of documents and barely a days goes by when it doesn't fcuk something up permanently with no reason.

I use Open Office at home. It's slow, but I think the OS has something to do with that (Linspire Desktop Linux).

Is it compatable with .doc and .xls and .ppt, etc files? And does it save in those formats?

Im needing a free burning software and a free newsgroup client and i should be just about legal. Aslo sometimes use Dreamweaver would be nice to find a free alternative to that too but i doubt there will be anything as nice.
Ive tried Linux in the past running dual boot and it done my head in, It was Suse 9 i tried, do you have any reccomendations for an easy distro to learn with? |
