any gaelic speakers? translation help needed

Can anyone translate 'tha gaol agam ort' for me? I'm not sure if there are any accents or any punctuation that should be in there.

Oh and an accurate pronunciation would be nice too.......

sorry i dont but i would really like to learn it as it would be a shame to see it die out. Scotland seems so far behind Ireland and Wales on this matter.

i am, but i thought kahoonas (from .net) was the only other speaker on the boards!

phonics for gaol are a bit scetchy there - it's more of an (ao) sound, somewhere between the two letters

there's actually a school in skye that is considering closing their english department, as all the parents are putting their kids into the gaelic units, so going on that, things are on the up!

I think the school you are talking about is in Sleat. A number of parents have been pushing for the school to become Gaelic only but it does not look as if the education authority are going to back it. There is a school in the Uists that is going down that road however.

You are right that the numbers learning are looking encouraging but I would have to say from my experience it is declining in terms of everyday use in my part of Skye (Glendale.) There are so many incomers who make no attempt to learn the language and those that do speak the language therefore tend to speak English in the company of non speakers so as not to cause offence.

There has been quite a change over the last few decades. My wife tells me her grandmother had very little English with folk of her generation more or less living their lifes speaking Gaelic.

I have a wonderful book of Gaelic sayings and proverbs. Sadly I am in Lanark just now and the book is in Skye. I will PM you when I am back up with the name and author.

My post expressed concern about the goverment spending tax payers money to encourage people to speak Gaelic - I have nothing against the language or those who wish to speak it but I do have an objection to governments pissing my money up the wall.

I don't think they should be funded by the state - as I've said before. (I say that with particular reference to England)

What's your point? I wasn't aware Gaelic was a religion.

I don't think its a dead language. I don't know why you say that. Its up to folk what language they want to speak and what culture they relate to. Seems like your inventing an arguement for yourself here.

Don't know what the "cool" bit is about either. I said it was an excellent site. Languages are interesting and fun - wish I'd spent more time learning more as a kid.

I agree with you on the funding of religious based education but it seems a bit off topic.
