I think devolution is not a leading us to independence but more of a step towards us being part of the United States of Europe.

Re: If there was a referendum on monday.....

colr do you mean Scotland becoming independant would be a dumb move?
ive heard arguments from both sides one claiming it would be financial suicide for us and the others saying the opposite and that we would be better off.
im no financial wizard by any means but i done a little bit of googling on this a while ago and i found that Scotlands population % of the UK and the money spent % was very close ( within 0.5% IIRC ), indicating that infact we may not be any worse or better off. as i say im not too clued up on this and my research was very crude and quickly done so not sure how accurate it is , but it does make intrested to hear what a neutral expert would say about the situation.

The financial aspect isn't, as far as I can see, the driving factor though. You have to have a reason beyond just money for being independent, and then work out if it's financially viable afterwards. Otherwise London or the south east could make itself independent and tell everyone else in the UK to feck off, just because they felt like it (I know, I know, they already do etc).

That doesn't make your question any less valid. And I'm afraid I find myself equally as confused as you. DK will tell you he has a zillion calculations that prove Scotland is the next economic powerhouse - and he may well be right - whereas others will point to the large and inefficient public sector, the end of manufacturing, the fragility of the financial services market etc etc, and come out with a totally different picture. I simply haven't a clue who is correct. But I'm not sure it matters that much. You have to decide why you want to be independent, and if you want to be, before you go into the viability with any seriousness.

It might be - it depends what you do with it!!! Actually, I meant the idea of a trial seperation was a dumb idea - as it is in relationships IMO.

Jury's out on the finances.

I didn't miss anything out. It's up to you to find reasons for independence, not me. If you think you've got them, and can convince your fellow Scots, then blow the whistle, run up the saltire and get on with it. I care hardly a jot either way I'm afraid. Naturally being fixated upon nothing but raw cash I'm too busy buying munitions shares and profiting from third world debt to think about anything except my third swimming pool.

No, that's not what I've got. What I've got is a massive spreadsheet breaking down the assets of the uk government in 2002. That shows a relative underspend in terms of assets located in Scotland, compared to the Scottish tax take, explicable for various reasons, one I believe to be preference and prejudice.
Okay. Presumably you do have some opinion on Scotland's economic future as an independent nation though?

Your other caveats are valid. I believe it possible, under a mature economically conservative regime, with radcial fringes

You're probably right. You certainly know a lot more about it than me. I just wonder whether you'd be able to get the mature economically conservative regime.
