BOOZE-FUELLED baying spectators hollering for blood, flying fists, vicious kicks and some of the worst language imaginable. Amid the threats of violence, the vile insults and the bone-crunching fouls which border on assault, lurks the beautiful game . . . amateur league style.

So extreme is the lack of discipline, intimidating behaviour and aggression among a few teams, that their fellow clubs are threatening to withdraw from their respective leagues rather than face further abuse.


The scale of the problem is revealed in one referee's shocking report, printed opposite, of a Monday evening Lothian and Edinburgh Amateur Football League match between Arniston and NCB, played out on the pitch at Gore Glen in Newtongrange - when so many players were sent off in disgrace that the match had to be abandoned in the 75th minute.

Already witness to a string of violent fouls which had led to seven players being red carded, experienced amateur referee Campbell Duncan found himself confronted by enraged NCB players, verbally abused and subjected to a string of vile insults.

It's not very nice that is for sure. And now that I attend my kids own sporting events, you can see the parents get mouthy with the officials. shut up ya bams !!!

Having read the article if I didn't know better I swear there was an Oakland Raiders supporter club there masquarading as a football side.

It's a hard job being ref and often times a thankless task. I played here for a while and the league I played in had a great rule that a yellow card meant going to the "sin bin". A bit like hockey where you got 5 minutes to cool your heels. If you yell at the ref they would give you a yellow card and that left your team short handed and your team mates were pissed at you too.
