On Experience is an.....

Apprenticeship a good way to start your career?

I'm 19 now and a few of my mates have apprenticeships( in 3rd and last year) and will be earning good money in the end.

On the other hand I have a number who are at University/College and are enjoying themselves to the max, but in the long run may not even end up with a job they want or earn as much as my friends who have been apprentices.

This is a dilema for me as a 19 year old, I am at cross roads and don't know what to do!!

No experience but you can be sure a tradesman will charge you just as much as a lawyer!!!

Gone are the days when a girl's parents wanted her to end up with a lawyer or a doctor. A joiner or sparky will do me fine

I was a trainee journalist in my day, and the pay was a joke compared to a mate who was fitting carpets.

We're probably about even now BUT a mate who's a hard-working spark (he now runs a couple of gangs of sparks) is earning more than any yuppie I know.

Saying that, if your heart isn't in it 40 years is a very long time in any job! You should choose whatever you think you can put up with and think you would be good at and enjoy.

Don't know about apprenticeships, but....

I did engineering at Uni.... and after almost 5years (enjoyed one of those years a little too much, then dropped out of final year after enjoying that one a bit too much) started managing a bookies (after having worked part time for the company while at uni) full time for pretty crap money and then various pubs as well - all very good fun, and allowed me to move at drop of a hat as didn't have anything long term, but never very much money.

Now, due to being a bit of a spawny f***er and getting my foot in the door as a phone monkey, I've eventually got myself a decent "career" type job working in IT for a bank down in Engerlund (as will probably be here for a while, unless my job moves to India!), but it really gets on my tits that there's two wee geeks in my office currently earning more than me on a graduate training scheme, and I'm having to do three times as much work as I have to cover for them not knowing jack shit!

Basically, while you may earn more in the short term as an apprentice and it's all cash in hand, if you don't know what you want to do in 40years you could be best doing a degree, and making sure it's in something you'll not hate in 4/5years time. While you may not get a job out of it, if you stick in, pass and get yourself a 2:1 honours (thats the key, and where i made an arse out of myself by not finishing my degree) you can get on any graduate scheme you want - and that's where the big money comes in. If you do that, you can be getting starting salaries round about 20k plus relocation bonus etc....

Plus, Uni's a fcuking right good laugh!
