PlayStation 3 - anyone putting in a preorder

Since it's looking like a November 2006 release for the PS3, it's time to start thinking about getting a preorder. Otherwise the big we'uns among us who are after one won't get a look in 'til well after Christmas.

Game.co.uk and Amazon.co.uk are taking email addresses but I'm thinking of putting a proper re-order with [Only Registered Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register].

In America, Toys R Us have a preorder offer with two free games for $50 but I don't think it applies over here.

Anyone got any other info?

Depends on the package but they say £350 - £400, it'll be fairly pricey compared to the 360 because for some reason the components are costing Sony a lot more.

Here's a comparison from cnet.com:

"The road to the next generation in home-console gaming could have been subtitled A Tale of Two Marketing Strategies. Microsoft's Xbox 360 had its own viral marketing campaign (via Ourcolony.net, the sanctioned source of many leaked photos preceding its launch) and rode a glitzy wave of publicity that encompassed high-profile keynote speeches and a star-studded MTV special. Meanwhile, aside from sporadic press releases touting the power of the company's next-generation Cell processor, we heard little to nothing from Sony and its highly anticipated PlayStation 3; fans hoping for "official" leaks of teaser images and hard specs were left disappointed.

Now the wait is over, the veil of secrecy has been lifted, and the gloves are off. In Sony's favor, the PlayStation 3 appears to have a technological edge over the Xbox 360, boasting next-generation Blu-ray DVD compatibility and a graphics processing unit capable of pumping out pixels at the hitherto unimaginable--for console gaming--1080p high-definition resolution level. For its part, Microsoft's console will use current-generation DVDs, with resolutions topping out at 1080i and 720p. That's still high-definition, but in a future where 1080p televisions will be the gold standard of HD performance, the PS3 wins the numbers game. However, Microsoft has one major advantage in the coming battle: time. The Xbox 360 hits stores in time for the holidays this year, well in advance of the PlayStation 3's 2006 release date. Furthermore, Microsoft has deviously announced that Halo 3, the latest sequel in its staggeringly popular shooter franchise, will deliberately launch on the same day as Sony's new console.

Sure, some have questioned whether gamers really even need a next-generation console so soon. But when the choice is between two systems whose processing specs are measured in teraflops (read: they're fast), the likely outcome is that both consoles will be tremendously successful."

Sounds good, the PS3 sounds the most advanced anyway.

I read an interesting poll from Japan. When asked what next gen console they were going to buy 47.9% said PS3, 44.6% said the Nintendo and only 7.5% said the Xbox360.

I always wondered why Xbox sales were very poor in Japan, it was said that in the last few months of last year the Gameboy colour was outselling the Xbox.

I also read somewhere that the Nintendo "Revolution" is a wee bit less powerful than the original Xbox, but it will only cost about £100, and Nintendo are hoping people buy it as a second console along with a PS3 or Xbox.

It seems odd, that, for sure: I was playing a mate's 360 the other day and it is a great piece of kit.

I done a quick search and it seems the Japanese are reluctant to drop their loyalty to the home made brands like Sony. Also, Nintendo seems to sell far better than the Xbox in Japan because until recently the xbox has concentrated on first person shooter games which are not very popular in Japan, whereas Nintendo have a large RPG and puzzle game collection which appeal much more to the Japanese.

Cheers for that. I hadn't taken into account that there's a big difference in the kind of games many Japanese gamers buy.

Re: PlayStation 3 - anyone putting in a preorder

Ive not made a decision about what next gen console to get yet. I think it will come down to the online capability and how the online service is run.

Microshite's closed service is great, 1 gamertag for all games but Sonys system is keek ive heard with gamertags being game specific and subscritptions payed to each game developer (well thats how i understand it ) . But MS are begining to ruin the online service with there gamerscore and acheivments, as people are more intrested in having a good score and completing silly acheivments rather than just playing the game for fun
I will also consider not using MS or Sonys online services but instead using one of the FREE tunneling programs that can be used for online console play. ( currently the only way to play GT4 online, and just full of ppl playing for fun rather than to have the most points )

Nintendo Revoloution will have that great new Wireless Wand thing that is gonna be amazing ( think sony and MS wont be far behind in copying this though ), will be able to plug it into a gun and sensors ( that you place beside your tv screen ) detect what way and what angle you are pointing the gun, this could also be utilised into a Golf club or a Fishing rod , whatever u can think of really.

right now im happy to wait as my modded xbox can do far more than any othere console around just now ( even 360, bar the graphics )
