Niall Lennon on Bigotry

The 34-year-old Irish Catholic grew up during the troubles in Lurgan, Northern Ireland, but spent 14 years living in England before signing for Celtic.

"I don't know about the whole of Scotland but there are areas where I've witnessed bigotry even more severe than it is in Glasgow," he told BBC Sport.

"The bigotry thing is not going to go away, it'll be here a long time."

But the midfielder pointed to an incident in Glasgow in May 2003 as evidence that bigotry is widespread in his adopted homeland.

Lennon was verbally abused by two students, one of whom was later convicted of assault.

In an interview with BBC Radio Scotland, Lennon added: "To me, that was the most shocking thing about Scotland because I had 14 years in England where I got away from it all and never really experienced it.

"But there is no doubt about it that it is alive and kicking to the detriment of the majority of the people here.

"You can't pull any punches when it comes to Rangers and Celtic.

"It is an intense hatred, but I would like to see it just for the 90 minutes.

Can't disagree with what he says but it would carry more weight if he criticised the way his own club has thrived by encouraging the religeous divide. Always the other lot that he criticises.

It would be interesting to hear his views on why fans of every club outside Celtic have a dislike of Neil Lennon.

I've said it before on several occasions on the Bounce. It's amazing how often it's an out of towner trying to be a big man in the big city.

True to a point, but I look at it as more of an out of towner getting highlighted by a media dominated by the west, and all that that entails.

Well you could try to blame it on that good old whipping boy, the bastard weedgie media.

Funny how I said this about the old firm clowns with Ayrshire/Ulster/Stirling/Edinburgh/Fife/Highlands addresses on the Bounce several months ago.

Since then we had the hun charged with bigot antics (Fife) and a wee reminder from Lennon about the mad mental wee student frae Aiberdeen.

Even the hun that attacked Kevin McKee at Ibrox all those years ago was from Stirling.
