Jamesie will become famous soon enough
Harris/Lewis?

Got some airmiles to burn and was thinking about the Outer Hebrides for the May bank holiday weekend. Can get there quite cheap and car hire looks OK. What's it like?

Harris is beautiful. It has the lot sandy beaches, great mountains, pictuesque lochs.

You do need a car to get around and see the place. To me Lewis is less interesting but does have some important sites such as the standing stones at Callinish. Stornoway would be your best bet for a night out.

As I type, from my house in Skye, I look across at Harris and the Uists.

Milovaig, just two miles on from Glendale. I split my time between here and Lanark.

As far North West as you can get. About 32 miles from Portree and say 57 miles from the bridge.

whats sort of thing you into Jamsie?

good things to do on Lewis & Harris IMO (from the south up) a top ten (plenty more to do but here are some of my faves)

1. visit Rodel medieval church - pay particular attention to some of the gravestones
2. Vistit St Kilda for the day from leverburgh £80 per skull but well worth it - booking essential
3. drive the golden road - lunar east Harris landscape and twisty as feck roads
4. play golf at the small 9 hole scarista course (harris west side) take in the views and open a tin of lager - hit the odd ball (IIRC clubs etc are for hire - honesty box)
5. visit sron ulladale and/or do the Huisinis to cravadale walk overlooking scarp in North Harris - watch out for eagles above.
6. Callanish stones and Doune Carloway broch - best archaelogy then rercreation at garenin of blackhouse village (with museum & cafe)
7. Uig loop - valtos and reef beaches in the sunshine and/or iron age house at Bosta Beach - Bernera
7. surf Dalmore beach (boards from derick in stornoway)
8. fishing on the moor - details form sportsworld in stornoway (cheap)
9. gaelic sunday service - psalms singing
10. sat night in town - clachan bar interesting wildlife, sometimes quite good bands on in the Golf Club or Sea Angling club (danglers) - ask around. Mcneils good for a quieter pint

The Western Isles are heaven on earth. I couldn't recommend anywhere more highly for a break, it's just a wonderful place for relaxation and (as Selkie points out) every leisure activity you could think of.

Re: Harris/Lewis?

I'd recommend, as The Selkie said, the
1.Church as Rodel
2.Driving the Golden Road...it is like being on a different planet!
3.Callanish
4. Dun Carloway Broch
5.The Black House at Arnol (but only if you don't mind honking of peat smoke for a month!)

I'd also add

6. The cliffs and lighhouse at the Butt of Lewis
7. Buying black pudding from any butcher on Lewis (tastes like no other Black pud you have ever eaten before)
8. The beach at Seilebost (sp?)
9. Watch out for Barabas (pronounced Barvez)
10. Interestingly (gruesomely) death notices are placed in butchers windows in the Western Isle.
11. A trip to Leverburgh ...not much to see but the history of the place is very intersting.....so called because of Lord Leverhume (?) who used the place as a whaling station to produce whale blubber for his soapy products!

Have a top time....I could tell you loads about Orkney should you want to know.
