Thief Lowests of the lowlifes

Unbelievable

A BLIND student had his laptop snatched from his side while he sat with his guide dog at college.

Sandy Miller, 44, was sitting in the refectory at Stevenson College enjoying a coffee when a thief took advantage of his visual impairment to swipe the computer, which was placed next to his dog, by his side.

The Compaq laptop, which had been fitted with specialist software for blind people, was believed to be worth in excess of £1600.

Mr Miller, from Broxburn, today spoke of his shock that the thief took advantage of his disability.

He had arrived at the college early on Monday morning and was having breakfast with daughter, Deborah, 18, at the refectory.

She left him alone with Alex, his guide dog, while he finished his coffee. As he gathered his belongings he reached for the laptop only to find nothing there.

After he rearranged the seat to search the floor with his hands Mr Miller found no sign of the laptop. A staff member came over to see if he had dropped something, and confirmed that the laptop was not there.

The bag was later found in a toilet. Although it still had a CD player and cassette player in it, the laptop and its power lead were gone.

Mr Miller said: "I can't believe someone would stoop so low as to do this. The laptop is about four years old so won't be worth a great deal to them, and even the software will be worthless to them.

"Some opportunist has seen me sitting with my laptop, seen the guide dog, and seen the chance to get it.

"I honestly don't know how anyone could stoop to that level.

"Nothing like this has ever happened to me before and it's really saddening."

Police have appealed for witnesses to contact them with details of the incident, which is believed to have happened between 8.55am and 9.15am at Stevenson's Bankhead Avenue Campus.

Mr Miller, who has been studying at the college for nearly five years, is well known to students and staff.

He is currently studying an HNC in the Scottish legal framework and an HNC in information technology applications.

"I've spent years training with this laptop so anybody using it for the first time won't know what to do with it - it is very different to a normal laptop.

"It's always talking to you as well - it would be enough to drive anyone mad if they weren't blind and relied on it. It's got a voice on it like Stephen Hawking and is really irritating.

"Many family arguments have been caused by my daughters when they turn the voice off on my home computer because they can't put up with it."

Mr Miller, who has two other daughters, Amee, 15, and Jane, eight, added: "I don't know what pleasure people can get out of something like this. It is so unbelievably low to steal something like this from under the nose of a blind man." Police valued the cost of the computer at £600, before taking into account around £1000 worth of software.

A police spokeswoman said: "We would appeal to anyone who witnessed this theft, or anyone who has been offered this laptop for sale, to contact police.

"The computer was designed for a blind person and this should make it quite distinctive."

Re: Thief Lowests of the lowlifes

Some guy on .net is mates with him and has already started a whipround for a new laptop.

I cannot believe how shoddy some people are to take advantage like that.

No excuses for this one I'm afraid. No drug addictions, no broken homes. Just the difference between being good and bad.

Re: Thief Lowests of the lowlifes

Some people stoop so low in life it depresses me, then something positive happens to restore my faith in society, c'mon all the good people out there. Hope the guy gets his personal property back, if not, the situation is resolved by those offering help.
