USSR behind shooting of JP2?

Soviets 'ordered Pope shooting'
Pope John Paul II wounded, 13 May 81
The Pope was shot while riding in an open car
An Italian parliamentary commission has concluded that the former Soviet Union was behind the 1981 assassination attempt on the late Pope John Paul II.

The head of the commission, Paolo Guzzanti, said it was sure beyond "reasonable doubt" that Soviet leaders ordered the shooting.

Turkish national Mehmet Ali Agca, now 48, shot the Pope in St Peter's Square on 13 May 1981, hitting him four times.

Agca never gave a motive, and mystery has continued to surround the shooting.

A link between Agca and Bulgarian agents, and through them to the Soviet Union's KGB, has been the subject of speculation over the years.

Re: USSR behind shooting of JP2?

I'm not entirely convinced that the motive is in line with the action.

A few commentaors ahve been suggesting this of late, having said but there were others who were promoting the trade union movement who were not shot (Oor Lech for example) - although in a Catholic country the Pope's view would have some influence.

I don't recall how strident he was in promoting an anti-Russian Communist agenda, though.

I think this lad was in charge. He does look dodgy. His eye brows meet in the middle.

It's a valid point re Lech (now there's a true hero of the workers).

perhaps the pope was a target they could hit less obviously? perhaps it was a gesture to the polish people that not even the church could stand against communism? perhaps the pope was feared because of his influence not just in poland but other occupied countries? perhaps it was feared he would communicate the polish position to the world?

who knows.
